Thought some may enjoy reading this interview with Roy Underhill.

Interesting and he plans a school in Pittsboro! Now that might be fun and close by!!

BTW - why is Pittsboro not in Pitt County? Or Greenville not in Greene County? Or Lenoir not in Lenoir County? Or .. you get the pic

Why do we drive on parkways and park on driveways?

Why is it that when sent by boat it's cargo, but when sent by truck it's a shipment?

How do you nail Jello to a wall?

Inquiring minds want to know...

Why is Gaston, NC or Lake Gaston not in Gaston County? Or WFU in Winston-Salem?

Good to see he is opening that school here. I knew he had ties to the Triangle. Imagine the shop crawl. IT might also give local groups, like TWA the shot in the arm they need.

Someone on the advisory board should try to line him up as a site sponsor and member.

There is a reason for WFU in Winston.

Sorry.. I knew a little about this and figured I would share. As for the rest of the questions in the thread. Your guess is as good as mine and for that matter why are Comb and Tomb not pronouced in a similar manner.

thanks for posting
I've talked with Mr Underhill at Colonial Williamsburg twice and twice at the NC Mountain fair. I know he doesn't remember, but I'll surely not forget!
The man is not only a wood working genius, he is brilliant in many regards. I particularly love that he not only does fine wood working but he tuly studies the art and know why and where and who, not just how.

Why is Yadkin College not in Yadkin County? Why is Rockingham not in Rockingham County? Why is Albemarle not on the Albemarle Sound?

Mike, I guess a number of folks, myself included, hijacked your thread. SORRY!!!! Seriously I think this is very good news for wood working in NC which we all have a vested interest. I know there are good WW schools in the Mountains but nothing around here. No offense to Woodcraft or Klingspor. It may also translate into additional revenue to this rganization and just maybe DQ pricing for some classes.

Call it synchronicity, call it fate, call it horse droppings....

I just saw St. Roy's new book in the book store today. Its pretty sweet!

Can't wait for him to setup shop in the area. My mind is like a sponge, and I don't just mean because its used to scrub pots!

Thanks for the link Mike.

Jim

Why are there interstate highways in Hawaii?

In college I worked for UNC Public TV on the production crew and we did a number of Woodwright Shop episodes. Roy is a real character who knows more jokes that can not be told in mixed company than anyone I've met before or since!

Of course, we all know he is an amazing woodworker but getting the chance to watch him work up close and personal is a real treat. In television, you typically have to shoot a scene multiple times to get it right. Most (if not all) of the WS episodes that take place in the shop were done in one take.

I made a whopping $70 a week on that job but the percs were priceless!

Several of us that attended the July BBQ and Area Q Meeting of the M-W Tool Collectors Association in Raleigh had a chance to jawbone with Roy in the food line -- nice guys indeed. You know he does his work by hand as they always have a scratch here and a bruise there!

And to add to the trivia -- Henderson is not in Henderson County, it is in Vance County; Hendersonville is in Henderson County.
