I just bought Macro's (VanillaGorilla) old jointer - THANKS!

In the process of reading the manual ( see http://www.ncwoodworker.net/forums/f...manuals-15577/), I noticed that it specifically warns against rewiring the motor for 220V operation, even if the motor is 220V capable. Now being the kid who in college sat at the back of the class and hollered "bull s*!*" when my Profs tried to gloss over improbable explanations, my first and instant reaction was WHY NOT?

So the question is "Does anybody more knowledgeable than me have a good explanation for why an older Craftsman 6" jointer should not be operated on 220V power, even if the motor is capable of 220V operation?"

First thought: If there's a capacitor wired to the motor, it may not be 220v rated.

I had some random thoughts about lower amperes -> lower torque, but couldn't prove it. But torque is going to be an important factor in this usage.

So, I'm leaning toward the capacitor idea, for now.

One question. Why change that jointer over to 220v ? With the motor using 120v you can move it anywhere you want without needing to run a 220v outlet to it.

Could be any number of reasons, from- "We don't want the liability of some idiot who is not an electrician rewiring this machine" to some specific reason- incorrect capacitor, incorrect switch, etc.
