Smile

A while ago my wife started doing some volunteer work for a Therapeutic Riding Center in Kenly www.reinsfromabove.org Of course it didn't take her long to let folks know what her husband could offer. I quickly had a long list of woodworking and landscaping projects. Today we started to knock them out. First on the list was a bridge to cross a drain swale that stayed muddy. Many of their students are wheel chair bound and it was impossible to get the chairs across the mud to the riding ring.
I purchased the lumber and pre-cut most everything in my shop Saturday afternoon.
Securing a couple of 16' 4 x 6 in the back of a less than 8' truck bed took some creative rigging -

The start of the bridge construction -

3 hours later the bridge is completed -

And it works -

The next thing on the list was to help design and layout a Butterfly garden. The plants were donated by a local garden center. I layed out the plants for my wife, daughter and a couple other volunteers to plant. The area was very muddy from recent rains, so they all decided to kick of their shoes and get some mud between their toes

Of course you had to clean up after all that mud -

All work and no play can make a dull day, especially for a 5 year old. So we took a little time for some horseback riding -

This is a great organization and it's run by some really cool folks. It was a pleasure to help them so they can help others better. If anyone is interested in helping this organization I have another project that really could use the collective help of North Carolina Woodworker. I will be posting about it in another thread...stay tuned.

Dave

Dave, you are the man!!! That is an awesome post filled with fun things for some very deserving recipients. I commend you for the selfless things that you and your wife did this weekend. Just another fine example of what North Carolina Woodworker folks offer our communities. The photo of the chair crossing the bridge says it all.

The spirit of giving is alive in the Onan family....great job Dave and family.

LOML and I have attended a benefit for a similar center near Jacksonville for a few years. It is amazing the stories they tell of the benefits the people get from riding horses for therapeutic purposes.

Way to go bro, a very good cause and another selfless act

Big surprise considering who did it huh!?!?

You're setting the bar way high for the rest of us. Looking for the upcoming post on the next project, I bet it's even better and bigger than this one. I don't have a lot of ww'ing skills to offer up but could offer some assistance with grunt work or the like if it falls on a day off for me.

Brian.

Brain the next project would be perfect for your skills. As a matter of a fact it falls right along the lines of the stuff that you and your wife create now.
I look forward to your help.

You and the Mrs. should be very proud of yourselves I have a daughter who rides and I know that a muddy terrain at a riding facility is a given. The work you do to help those with mobility issues is a great gift. Having been to your place and knowing that "turnaround" area is at a premium, I have to ask.........did you back all the way down that lonnnnnnnnnggggggg driveway ?

Very nice work Dave (and family)! Looks like a fun time and a great gesture.

When I first looked at this thread I saw the picture of the wood in the back of your truck, but I hadn't scrolled down far enough to see the length of the 4x4"s. I was thinking, "man Dave! You don't hold anything back on the straps!"
