A book and a computer CD:

The CD I am not really all that impressed with, but it does have some pictures, sound clips and a little information about a lot of different instruments. The book is a much more valuable asset. It explains what makes instruments work and not just in theory. It explains how to shape maribmba bars to get different tones, create or eliminate harmonics, get more/less volume, etc. It has that kind of information about making soundboards and choosing strings for string instruments, wind instruments, drums, bells and just about anything that makes tones. What this does is give me the information I need to be able to make a functional instrument when all I know is the size and shape and what it is supposed to sound like and what scale it is supposed to be tuned to (either according to tradition or customer preference). I still have a lot to learn and need much practice but it should greatly reduce the amount of trial and error.

I also got a new camera:

Not so much of a gloat because one of my kids broke my old one and I replaced it with the model closest to it I could find. I was happy with it and I didn't want to spend much. I had the HP M425. I could not find another one new, but I found a new (been on a shelf a while, but umopend) HP 437 which is almost the same camera with a few minor enhancements.

That is definitely gloat worthy Andy. It's always better to have more of a "full circle" approach. I know that I got a lot better at surfing once I started surfing all different types of boards. I guess that would apply to a lot of things. You may prefer to make one type of insturment, but having knowledge about making a lot of different types will make you much better all around and inevitably better at your favorite instument(s).

By the way, I need a picture of the camera, not the box.

Cheers,

Trent

That book looks like it will bring a lot together for you! Best of luck in building an instrument. That's one project I don't know I'll ever under take!

The moment I read the post about needing the picture of the camera, and not the box, I knew what was coming! might have some issues with your nose, but there are more than a few physicians 'round here that could do something about it.... Any surgeons want to excise that????
