I mentioned this in another post, but just felt inclined to do so again. Many of us make gifts for friends and family. We try to juggle parties, pagents, concerts, family visits, travel, shipping deadlines - all sorts of things that take our minds away from important things like:

Chop / cross cut saw blades spinning
Table saws with guards removed
Resawing thin stock on bandsaws
spinning routers with bits inserted too far, or set down too soon

As just as much a warning to myself as a reminder to everyone else - please take time to watch what you're doing. Don't go for that "one last cut". If you wonder if you are getting too tired, you probably are already past the point of doing something safely.

It is not even limited to the dangerous activities mentioned above. It could be something as seeing many, hours of sanding and surface preparation wasted because of trying to rush that extra bit of finish on before calling it a night, or even failing to double check the dimensions of a cut.

Please be careful my friends so we don't read about any "oops" or "close one" messing up the holidays - and I will do my best not to post one of my own! Truly enjoy the upcoming season!

Shop safety is a year round thing and one we all tend to overlook. Remember folks we are not just talking power tools. Several years ago a spend a evening in the ER thanks to a quick cut with a sheetrock knife.

Thanks Rick.

Excellent advice Rick. Where were you when I needed you (on Oct. 9 - the date my thumb took on the tablesaw blade). The points you mentioned should be uppermost in our minds, not only at this time, but throughout the year. I now use a guard and hope not to make that mistake again. It was good seeing you at lunch a couple of days ago. Those banks you're making look very nice.

It was self-directed as much as anything else. I have started making a list of things I want to give, and it is growing. I can feel a little "pressure" building already. I don't want to hurt myself or mess up a final cut because I was pressing too hard.

Let's see I figure:

4 more PO Door banks
1 recipe box
1 hummingbird wall hanging
1 combination flowerbox-birdhouse
2 router made bowls
1 duck bandsaw box (from an earlier thread on this board)
1 coffee cup holder "tree"
1 key/letter holder

We'll have to see how much gets done!

I have one of those in my craft fair inventory. Maybe we can work a trade.

Tell me what you're looking for. I am going to try and do it myself as it will be for my mom. You know - the old grade school thing - making stuff for your parents and all. However, if there is something you've in mind let me know and if I can help I will.

Send me an email if you prefer.
