I'm asking the collective brain trust of North Carolina Woodworker'er again.

My wife and I are having a yard sale in the next couple of weeks. Considering we both had apartments when we got married, we have a lot of stuff we need to get rid of.

Do you all have any tips or tricks for advertising it so we get the most traffic?

Any tips on pricing stuff?

Any ideas on how to get the have the best bang for the day?

Thanks!

I would advertise in the local newspaper. Also I would advertise on the Time Warner swap and shop channel, I think it is channel 7. Although it is off of the air today for some reason.

We'd thought about the Charlotte paper and Craigslist.

On the pricing, I'm thinking if I think it's a great deal it might be a little over priced. We'd like to make a little money off of this, but getting some of this gone would be nice too.

Definitely post on CL, I've had good luck on them. Also price fairly, but give some wiggle room, as people like to bargain.

We've had success in the past by getting a couple neighbors to join us. This reduces the cost of advertiser and increases traffic.

I'm working on that now, but I live in a very diverse neighborhood and there are a few households where English isn't spoken.

As far as cost, it's only like $10 on the Charlotte Observer and CL is free. I'm going to print the yard sale signs.

I'd like to make it as big as possible, to just get this stuff OUT OF HERE!!

Think about the signs. If you caan't read them at what ever the speed limit is it makes it difficult to get people to your sale. Make them big and clear. Big arrows help also.

Good luck with the sale.

Having been down this road MANY TIMES in the past, let me start by asking one question: Are you trying to get what stuff is worth or get rid of stuff?

My advice is to get rid of stuff. If that becomes your goal, price it at a "get rid of" price. You will be surprised at how much you can still make if you do this.

My wife & I tried many times the "ask what it's worth, or close to it" pricing method and ALWAYS ended up taking most of the stuff back inside. A few years ago we tried "just get rid of it" pricing, and sold all but one paper box full out of a van full of stuff. Made some decent money too.

MTCW, YMMV

A successful Yard Sale is when you bring "NOTHING" back in the house

That's what we're thinking. We don't want to give it away, but it'll be real close.

If the first weekend doesn't do so well, we'll do it one more time, after that it all heads to Goodwill.

Phillip,
We just had one today and 3 other neighbors joined in. I have a couple "Yard sale" signs you can have. I'm going to pull them up right now.

Give me a call.

How'd y'all clean up? I'll give you a call later today or tomorrow. We're still sorting stuff....it's amazing how much crap one can accumulate.

After a couple of garage sales that I had to get rid of stuff, priced at a "get it out of here" price, people trying to haggle a .25 cent pair of pants to .10 cent (they were like new, not ragged) and a lot of bandsaw like that (come on folks, its a $10 book I'm selling for .10 cents, don't haggle to a nickel), now we just donate the stuff to goodwill and take a nice tax write off. Less hassle.
