Just got off of I-59/I-20 in Birmingham after 14hrs of stop and go traffic driving a rental car out of SW Louisana. (Why a rental care you ask?...Let's just say USAirways will need to find another source of future revenue and spare you the story of how not to take care of customers ) Tired does not even come close to how we feel right now. Our Labor Day weekend visit to our Daughter's new (to her) 124 year old Cajun shotgun cottage ended early. We spent the last few days helping her and her boyfriend get things ready for Gustav. We made and installed 20 sets of Cypress storm shutters in 2 days and buttoned up everything. They spent today getting things ready on the inside and are set to go into town to a shelter if things look dicey tomorrow. Right now the path is directly over them but historically hurricanes shift east by ~50 miles just prior to hitting the Gulf coast so hopefully they will be on the northwest side of the storm which should be less intense.

Please think good thought for everyone down there as they deal with another kick in the gut while still trying to recover from Katrina and Rita. Donations to the Red Cross are the best way to help.
Thanks!
Mark

Sorry about your visit getting cut short, but I'm glad you got out of there safely. Good job with the shutters too! I think everyone's holding their breath with this one.

Mark, hope everything goes well with daughter's new home and the storm is not as bad as feared.

Yes the Gulf coast has had more then it's fair share. I truly feel sorry for those folks. Glad your family is out of harms way. I pray the storm is not as bad as expected.

I'm glad you were able to get out Mark. I'm sure you feel better to have put your own touches on the storm preparations for your daughter. My folks down there are either evacuating from New Orleans or battening down the hatches in the Baton Rouge area.

A quick update...
We got home this evening after driving from Birmingham. Our daughter updated us after the storm passed directly over their parish. She, boyfriend, the dog, cats and the house survived intact. One photo she emailed via cell phone showed some limbs had fallen from one of the "Chicken" trees (Actually a Chinese Tallow or Popcorn tree as they're known as along the Carolina/Georgia coast) and she had a small roof leak in one of the bedrooms. Very fortunate!
As you can imagine we are relieved to have this over and also to be home. Time for a few adult beverages, dinner, a hot shower and bed.

Mark
