I have been loosing around a half dozen tomatoes every day due to something breaking the skin and then the ants move in and take over. The ants are what I call pi$$ ants, not the bigger black or red ones. I don't know what is taking a bite first but whatever it is, it doesn't finish the job. Anyone know what might be ruining my mater patch?????

Could be box turtles, I have found them in our tomato patch before.

But, they only nip at the ones very close to the ground. If the problem is up off the ground you'll be looking for some kind of worm or maybe small bird.

Birds!

I am also having a problem with fire ants. They do not seem to need any help getting started.

It might be horn worms, we're getting a ton of them right now.

Mike,
if it's a split in the skin it's probably has something to do with the amount of water they're getting. When the ground goes from very dry to very wet they swell and bust. Mulch will help regulate the soil moisture better but they will still bust if the grond gets soaked.

My garden is small, but I installed fencing this year . . . no rabbits or deer
But I occasionally get split skin on tomatoes when it rains a lot.
Since FIL has an abundance of Silver Queen corn . . . man, I'm in heaven eating corn and maters everyday of the week

Roger
