Re: What is your secret to weight loss?

My wife and I went on the Nutrisystem diet a couple months ago. Since then I have gone back to my hot dogs and popcorn. YET YET YET, I lost 20 pounds in a bit under 2 weeks and have felt better since. Hopefully I will get back on it and lose another 20 here soon.
Good Luck!
Rod.

Re: What is your secret to weight loss?

I lost 35 lbs last year, just by giving up fatty/fast foods. I have eaten my fair share of turkey sandwiches in the last year, but I do feel a bit better for it.

Re: What is your secret to weight loss?

One would be amazed at how much weight can be shed by giving up sweet drinks.

I've been drinking diet sodas now for 10 years.

Unsweatened tea RULES!!!

I lost 20 pounds after the switch.

Re: What is your secret to weight loss?

Weight Watchers is working for me. That along with walking and biking. Staying active, identifying what I'm eating every day and keeping a log of it. One finds out rather quickly that they can eat a lot more than is recommended on a daily basis if they aren't tracking it. I grew up with the "starving kids in China" mentality, but as a kid I was so active (grew up on a farm, spent a few years in road construction, then home remodeling) that I struggled to gain weight up until I finally decided to go to college. Eating at McDonald's 4 nights a week while driving a desk will pack on the pounds very quickly.

Re: What is your secret to weight loss?

Please keep the suggestions coming, I feel inspired with each post that I read. I think most of us know what we need to do to lose weight, getting started and sticking to it is the greatest problem. Seeing your granchildren grow up can be the key to starting the engine, we each must search our hearts and find what works for us. Lorraine

Re: What is your secret to weight loss?

I have found that spot dieting does not work for me. I am trying to change the way I live my life with regards to food. Weight Watchers is helping. Especially tracking what I eat on a daily basis.

To stick with the program I play a couple of games with myself. As has been said this is mstly mental. First, when something desirable but "bad" for me comes along I ask myself "How likely am I going to have a chance to eat this again?" If the thing is rare Belgium Chocolate, I will have some. If it is a Snickers bar, I'll pass. There is always going to be another Snickers bar in the future.

The other trick I play is I veiw indulgences as negative work. I am a fairly active guy, despite being very overweight. I run, bike swim and play ice hockey. All of those things are "positive work". If I have spent an hour riding a bike I tell myself when say or instance when I am offer ice cream or pizza, "that's going to nulify all the good I have just done by riding." The negative will wipe out the positive. So I pass up the temptation. It is ok to indulge once and awhile I just try to choose carefully when and for what I indulge in.

BTW I am in Munich Germany right now and in 3 days I have had NO beer, beef or chocolate!

Doug

Re: What is your secret to weight loss?

No Travis, no pork and only limited bread. I have had chicken mostly, a lot of fruit and vegetables. There is a HIT supermarket near my hotel, so I went there for food and supplement that with sandwiches from Subway and from the cafe at work.

Funny I miss the choclate more than the beer.

Re: What is your secret to weight loss?

I too am doing well on Weight Watchers! My wife and I joined 10 weeks ago and I've lost 23 pounds so far. As some have hinted at, it isn't a diet. It is a change in how you look at things. I still eat the same amount of food, but I tend to eat more of the things that are good for weight loss (fruits and veggies) and less of the things that aren't (pizza and beer). That is not to say that I don't have the carb crack, I just have less than I used to and balance it out by going for a walk in the evening around our neighborhood with my wife. One of the things I've learned that is beneficial in a few areas is to write things down (this applies to food and finances and other things). When you realize that you are eating the daily recommeded calorie intake for one meal (say a trip to the golden arches) .. it really opens your eyes. Like I said, I still eat the same amount of food (I'm not starving doing weight watchers) ... I just eat the food in different combinations and quantities. (If we have pizza, I have 2 slices and a salad as opposed to eating half a pizza myself which is what I used to do).

The other key is movement. You have to do more than what you used to in order to lose weight. You can be an active person and not lose weight because you are doing the same amount of activity that you always do. I play tennis 3 days a week and wasn't losing weight. (One because my portions were all out of whack and two because I never did anything besides my normal tennis). I have found out that if you do the same thing over and over, your body will become accustomed to it....you have to shake things up a bit every once in a while.

Well hopefully I haven't bored you too much...I like sharing since I have just recently been doing so well.

Re: What is your secret to weight loss?

Hi all, thought I would throw my comments into the mix...I went from 198lbs, back down to 165-170lbs...
Eat smaller portions, for me that meant cutting my normal amount at each meal, in half..(take the other half for lunch the next day) drink more water...be more active (not to the point of passing out, but walk more, not fast just more), eating more greens, no soda (diet or otherwise) or sweeteners, less sugar, use less butter, less breads, eat breakfast each morning as this is the meal that tells your system to get going again!!! Do not skip meals....if you find you are still hungry, eat more often during the day, smaller portions, healthier stuff such as fruits, water...eat better meats such as chicken, leaner cuts of beef (but cut down on the number and size of servings of beef, pork)
Yes, it is painful no doubt, but as your body adjust and starts to consume the fats in your system to replace what it is has become accustomed to, you will notice the difference...
Stay off the scale, maybe once a week, do not let it dictate what you think may be happening or make you get disgusted.....The extra weight did not get there over night, so it is not going to disappear over night...some weeks you may see 3-4 or more pounds difference, maybe more or less....some maybe not as much...but do not get disgusted, hang in there...
My Ms has struggled with this for a long time, has tried darn near everything, she is finally using the Jenny Craig stuff, and it seems to be working for her... She is not one of the ones who can do this on her own, so this type of program with the counselors and provided food portions, seems to working really good for her...She has been on it for three weeks, each week she has managed to see 2-4 lbs difference...it takes a lot of will power and determination and encouragement....
Hope this did not come off as preachy....best of luck to all of you who are headed down this path....and please remember to check with your doctors if you feel something is not quite right...
Regards,

Tony ...

No beer while in Germany ? That's just sacrilege.
