I couldn't help but notice the larger than life pics of of us older woodworkers which brought up the following post. Would anyone be willing to share what their secrets to weight loss were. Take a look at my pic and you will see that I could lose a few extra pounds myself. I for one would appreciate any and all suggestions. Lorraine |

Honestly Honey, that will cost around $100 $150 $200, and I need a few more tools.

I would truly say that by looking at your "Picture" you have an amazing program. Looks like you lost more than a few "Extra" pounds. If anyone can out due you in suggestions I would be interested, but maybe not to the extent you went. Terry

A subject on which I am immenentyl qualified to speak!! Pretty simple. Intake must be < than activity. Eat less, be more active. Didn't say it was easy, just simple.

Terrance, I don't know what pic you were looking at but my secret for the past 40 years has been to judge my weight gain by the fit of my clothes. At 5'2" my greatest weight was 143, South Beach worked at removing about 10 pounds, that was about 10 years ago, at 137, it isn't as easy this go round, maybe it's that I am 10 years older. Must keep trying though, I come from a family of very large women, I can't lose the battle at the age of 60. Lorraine Maybe my latest attempts with SB have failed because I cheated a little. |

I totally agree with 2 statements above. First is simple eat less calories then you burn and your body will feed off the reserves (fat). Second 90% mental 10% physical.
You have to decide you are ready to lose weight. When you "cheat" you are cheating yourself not the diet. Now it is much easier to say it then to do it. I am proof of that. |

Body for Life - The theory is simple: Life Balance. Exercise correctly (i.e. don't just jog, it's a waste of your time), Eat correctly (i.e. salads alone won't cut it) and Enjoy each day (i.e. a positive attitude the whole way). It really is NOT a diet, but a life style change. If you stick with it, the results are great (personally, in the past I've taken off 45lbs just changing my life style along their guidelines). HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. Many programs have copied it, and heck it may have copied from somewhere else, but it's easy to understand, easy to follow, and gets results.
More recently, I took on P90X. Built on similar concepts, it's a "watch the dvd workout program" and "follow the book" diet plan (diet similar to Weight Watchers, but with more proteins & such for muscle building and energy). In 6 weeks I dropped about 30lbs, and about 40lbs over the 12 week period (could have done MUCH better, but got lazy around the holidays)
All in all, I would recommend just keeping things in balance. Educate yourself (don't just listen to others, you don't know what they really know or are just saying), and commit (the key for sure!).
As I always tell my wife before I go work out in our upstairs bonus room ... the different between sitting here and watching TV and going to sweat my booty off for the next hour is as simple as a DECISION. So decide. |

As I have posted here before, I've been very successful with Weight Watchers....77 lbs in 34 weeks. I've been a very hefty guy for many years. I kept saying I wanted to lose weight but never did. I finally found something that truly motivated me and that is that I want to see my two little grandchildren grow up. At 271 lbs that was not very likely. It is a mental game as had been said. You have to be seriously motivated, want to lose weight as badly as you've ever wanted anything, believe with all that is in you that you will be successful, and be totally committed to do whatever is necessary. It is definitely a life style change. It all boils down to DESIRE, BELIEF, AND COMMITTMENT. It's not easy but you will be successful if you can buy into the above. I'll stop preaching now and I hope I don't come across as a know-it-all because I'm not one of those. I just know what has worked for me and believe that it will work for others. |

A big jug of 'Want-to' and a diet I can take on the road helped me drop 40lbs. The South Beach worked (and still works when I'm not shovelling barbeque, huspuppies and 'nanner puddin in my face) for me. May not be for everyone but I was able to feel like I wasn't starving...even during the first phase of the diet which is pretty restrictive in foods.
Getting rid of most white food (sugar, white flour, rice, pasta, potatoes, chips, etc). Substituting brown/green/red/yellow things. "Double veggies, no pasta/potatoes/fries please".
Getting rid of high fat foods and not including low fat versions high in sugar or corn syrup. An example is low fat salad dressing. Most of the low fat versions are higher in calories than the full fat versions.
Beer is the Crack of Carbohydrates. It coverts to fat quicker than any other carb. I do miss it... my waistline doesn't.
Portion control, portion control, portion control. Eating in resturants is a killer and occupational hazard for me. It's not unusual for meals to have >2000 calories and a lot of fat. Request a take out tray when they bring the food and put 2/3rds of the meal in it. After the meal find a homeless person and watch them smile.
Instead of hitting the freshly baked cookies they have waiting on me when I get back to the hotel I make a cup of Sleepy Time tea.
