Not bad ... that's twice as much as I learned.

I didn't learn much, as it was largely a mistake-free day.

I had another of those days where I didn't learn as much as I did realize I couldn't remember what I already was supposed to have known.......

One nice thing about getting older I understand, you always get to meet new people and discover new things - in your own home, and over and over again!

I learnt yesterday that it sucks when something you made splits and needs to be thrown away, I hate wood sometimes

Ah, Grasshopper! You have learned the true essence of the art of woodworking! Wood is NOT made to be round! It's FLAT by nature and its own preference!

My vote (appropriate today!) is mortar, and I STILL vote to enter this in 2010 Calendar Contest!

Sounds to me you need to learn the wonders of modern chemistry- i.e. 5 minute epoxy! Splits are just voids in the wood's memory that need to be filled with a lasting essence of the wood's nature (sawdust and binder)

They both look great to my eyes!!

Go

PS If you do try to epoxy mend, let it set up about 20 minutes and then pare off the excess with a sharp chisel. After it fully cures (next day), it can be sanded to the same gloss as the neighboring area.
