I went to college with a guy from the old country, named Winkelman. From the first day of school, until forever, he was "Plugger." Can you figure the derivation (think dike ). Then there was my roommate from Maza Peekwah Pahk LonG Guyland, Noow Yahk

Bas is about like me. I've been called 'Dennis the Menace' all my life. I even know the guy that now draws the weekly strip. Some people even abbrevaited this to 'menace' (mennis, whatever). I figured as long as they don't call me late for supper..... Right, Bas?

I am from Upstate New York. Yes I know Boo. Anyway that part of the state had been settled by the Dutch in the 1600's. Many of the towns had Dutch names and they all ended in kill. So that Bubba Bas can keep his Dutch hertiage how about Bubbakill?

Was wondering about this myself. I guess I have too much time on my hands.

Alan, it's LoownG-Guyland...

FWIW, I was in a group once with a Dutch guy named Joop. Some of the guys just couldn't get the correct pronunciation...

Now I'm confused. I thought Jackleg had just named him Buzz! That's acutally closer to Bas.

After 24 years in the tax business, Bas may just be the only thing I haven't been called.

Dude, forget it. I could tell you, but then I'd have to bubba-kill you.

My last name is "pluim" - which I pronounce as "plume" here in the great US of A. The actual Dutch pronunciation is very hard to accomplish. It would involve clamping your left hand in a vise, making you eat a pack of winter fresh gum, then forcing ice cold water down your throat while electrocuting your right big toe and dropping a snake down your back. The shocked yelp that will escape your lips should approximate the "ui" sound.

You may want to re-think participating in the shop tour

BTW, when people ask me how to spell my name, I usually reply "It's P as in pneumatic, L, U, I, M as in mnemonic". That usually gets me a fair share of exasperated looks.

My old boss and good friend is now a US citizen, but he was born in China. His name is Kitwa Peter Ng. He goes by Peter. You should hear people trying to pronounce his name over a PA. Paging Mr. "Nig", "Ung", "Ing". It is actually pronounced "ENN JEE" .

We could always rename him Basil as in Fawlty, sort of fits, if you get my drift....

Yeah, and it's all your fault! Do you have ANY idea how big my ego is right now? Did you see the "misplaced tools" post? That's about the right size.

David, that's good -- as long as you're not naming him after Manuel's rat...
