I hate it anytime I see trees have fallen on anything. Glad no one was hurt. The way that wind was wipping up yesterday I was surprised I saw as few down as i did.

I got burned in 2002 ice storm as well. Pine leaning over the truck. Moved the truck to be safe and in 10 minutes down came the pine. Went to work, come home, and find a different pine on the truck. $5000 later (with a $500 deductible) I get my truck back.

At least if it had to happen, it happened now instead of 2 weeks from now when all of the insulation would have been sprayed.

You can't tell it from the photo, but about 1/4 of the main roof tin will require replacement, and about 1/2 of the porch. Plus a few rafters...

And what sucks even more, is that the tree fell right on my stockpile of uninstalled tin for the back of the house! ARGH!!!!!!

Pete - I will take very great pleasure in milling that pine tree... the base section is about 18" in diameter so I'll get some decent boards. I'll also have to figure out a suitable use for it - maybe an outhouse or something...
If it were me I would make that pine pay - it would become replacement rafters for the ones it broke. wow that really does suck the house was looking sharp too.

Jeff, that's not a bad idea, but I think that I'll add a slight twist to it...

Instead of using the pine to replace the broken rafters (would take a few weeks of work to mill and KD), I think that I'll replace the broken rafters with store-bought lumber (that way I can fix it sooner), but mill / dry the pine to use for the porch ceiling wood on the farmhouse.

Only seems appropriate - after all the tree gave it's life so that it could snuggle up to the house's porch - I'll just make it a permanent marriage!

SS

JohnW - that's not a bad idea either...
