Unhappy

It looks like Tropical Storm Hanna has made the jump to hurricane status and his heading in the direction of South Carolina or possibly up this way. It is expected to make landfall on Thursday or Friday, which poses a big problem for me. As of right now, I'm planning on being in Greensboro to do some side work on those two days. So whatever I decide to do needs to be done by Wednesday.

It is forecasted to be a category 1 when it makes landfall, but it is still a little too far out to know for sure. I'm not really worried about storm surge from a cat 1 or 2, but I'm really concerned about rainfall. If we have one solid day of rain, which is very likely to occur, many of my neighbors say that there would be about two feet of water on the ground level, where my shop is. My only solution is to move everything upstairs and into the house. However, if I could get everything off the floor in there, it would all be about 4 feet off the ground, but I'd still have to move the bandsaw and table saw upstairs. I guess I'll just wait and see. Looks like not a lot of shop time coming up for me.

Cheers,

Trent

PS: The folks in the path of Gustav are in my prayers.

Trent, I hope for your sake that it turns back out to sea, but the computer models show it going in at the SC, Georgia border and then progressing in a northwest path right up around the NC mountains. The bad thing is there are at least three more brewing out about the same place this one formed. Although we need the rain, we don't need it all at one time.

Get you stuff as high as you can then get out of there!

If you have time while in Greensboro let's have lunch or dinner.

Trent, Perhaps the fastest way to get them up from the floor is to get a bunch of pallets and build a platform that they can go up onto -- Each pallet should give you about 6'' of rise -- I'd screw some 2x4's to a side-by-side stack at diagonals to keep the pile stable. Lots of places through out pallets, so hopefully you can find a local source. Best bet, of course, would to be to get them up to the upper floor, but that could be tough.

Saturday, my brother returned from a visit to Chareston, SC. He said the hotels were telling folks to cut the stay short, and that the trip back was in heavy traffic, like others from SC were heading inland.

Yep, just as I expected. They're saying it will be a Cat 2 now and it is forecasted to make landfall around the SC/GA border. They always say SC and then it ends up coming here. Either way, even if it does make landfall South of here, we're still going to get the meat of the rain. I'm cleaning out the shop and putting everything in the house.

Mike,

I'll send you a pm about lunch or dinner. It will probably be dinner as we'll be working all day. I'll let you know. It would be great to meet you.

On a lighter note, the surf has been pretty fun today and should be for the next few days.

That wasn't me, but I had plenty like that one.

Cheers,

Trent

Tonight is Charlotte they are predicting that it will come through here as a Cat 1, or a very strong tropical storm. Course this far out, they alway predict that it will hit Charlotte. If it looks like it is coming through, I may just pack up the guns, and children and head for the mountians for a few days.

Think I will go back to bed. Nothing approaching good news this morning, at least for me.

My first post surgery trip is supposed to be to our place on Edisto Island. It is on the most southern tip of the island. Look left and see the ocean, look right and see the bay. Oh well!

I suppose the storm will then come on up this way, soak the ground and then blow a 100 year old oak on the house. Might as well take the roof off the barn while it is at it. For some reason this sounds all to familiar, as in Hugo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Worst of all I called the doctors office this morning to see if I could drive myself to the library, only 6 miles. It has been two weeks since the surgery. Not only no but heck no

Thanks for listening. Anyone have any cheese to go with my whine.

Cheer me up Bas!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I tend to take the forecaster's predictions with a grain of salt. Before Hugo hit in '89, I had a cousin who was a Game Warden on Hilton Head. He sent his wife & kids to stay with his parents in Camden, SC as it was predicted to hit at Savannah. Hugo missed Savannah, hit Charleston and then dead centered Camden - and Charlotte. Ya never know with these things.
Knew another guy who towed his boat back to CLT from the coast the day before the storm & put it in his dad's garage. A tree fell on the garage & totaled the boat!

I was in Charlotte at a meeting during Hugo. I'm hoping for the best for everybody east of here. What do the folks with boats around the coast do with them during these storms?

Most people get them out of the water and store them in a garage or outside. The ones that don't usually end up laying in someone's front yard.

With my luck, I just moved most of my tools upstairs into my bedroom. I still have the tablesaw and bandsaw to move too. Watch it not rain a drop here.

Yep, you never know
Friend lives on a mountain top in North Wilkesboro and during Hugo he was deeply concerned about his parents that lived in Fajardo, Puerto Rico. Parents got hit hard in PR, but luckily not much damage. After hitting Charlotte, Hugo moved on to North Wilkesboro where it slammed down trees . . . including one that crashed through the garage and demolished his car
