We are going on a Disney land/sea vacation in mid May (missing the picnic ) and one of my assignments is to get some walkie talkies (or Personal Radio Systems) for use in the parks, on board ship and at a couple of stops in the Bahamas. In the disney parks, we will also have phones, but on board there is only service in some specific locations. I am not sure whether just 2 units is enough or if we need to get a 3rd for our 12 year old daughter. I don't want to add to much to the small fortune this is already costing . Suggestions?

I would say depending on how much she will be away (out of sight) from you guys would decide on if she needed one or not. Perhaps you would know someone that already has a set that you can borrow?

The radios are a good idea for Disney.....Too good.
Everybody has them and there is a lot of clutter and interference.
Sometimes they will work but others they will not.
On the ships they may work (if they let you use them).

Cell phones are better at the Disney parks.

Just our experiences from the many trips.....
Ron

PS...Tuesday morning has them (PRS radios) for $9.99 each........They claim 2 mile coverage

Andy,

Before you buy any radios, check to make sure you can use them at the locations you are going to. Frequencies used on these radios are area specific and may not be legal outside the USA. Also when on board ship you have to insure that they do not interfere with any communications or equipment that is part of their environment. I am sure you should be able to get that information from Disney and save yourself any disappointment or expenses.

Andy,

If you still want to go with walkie talkies, I have a pair that you can borrow. I think that they are good for 2 1/2 miles, they always worked for me. PM me if you want to try them out.

Good point about the cruise ships. Just came off a cruise last month and radios were not permitted. Apparently the crew uses them and they do not want you to hear the message " Water in the engine room again, bring down more bublegum to fix the hole."

Actually, I have a hand held marine VHS and I did consider that as a remote possibility, because I could always use another. I got it for my sailboat. They really aren't for general communication (there are some channels that are, but even then there are protocols you are supposed to follow) but you would be amazed to hear how they actually get used out on the water.

I also have a couple that you could use. I think they have several channels, and might be able to sync with someone else's radios

Honestly Honey, that will cost around $100 $150 $200, and I need a few more tools.
