Took a little break from making sawdust

The Mrs & I went out berry picking Saturday morning with her dad at Lyon Farms. We hauled in 39.5 lbs of blackberrys and my arms and hands are still recovering (note to self - leather armor for the hands and arms next time). Now what in the world would I do with nearly 40 lbs of blackberries? I'm glad you asked!

The Mrs made a couple pies (substituting splenda for 1/2 the sugar).

The other 36 lbs of berries went into a stock pot along with 9 gallons of water, a few other odds and ends type chemicals and 22.5 lbs of sugar and six packets of yeast. Gonna be tough to wait a year to sample this stuff. 15 gallons fermenting right now, will probably yield 12 after we strain it next week. It was fun putting it all together, making a mess of the kitchen, turning my hands black and blue, and it was even more fun to have the Mrs and her dad help do it all. If the batch yields 12 gallons, I think that's close to 60 - 750 ml bottles.

If that all works out and I don't end up with vinegar, I might have to get Mr. Beer out of the closet and make some cherry wheat brew.

Nixed any idea the mrs had for using splenda for the drinkin' stuff. I don't have any distillery equipment (yet) so wine will have to do (for now).
I'm thinking some of this might be ready for tasting around Thanksgiving or Christmas time, although it's supposed to age for a year. Won't hurt to break out a bottle or two just to see how it's coming along though.

Most of the wood is still waiting to be used, I'm took some of the really thin stuff and cut 15 pieces to try my hand at one of the simpler intarsia projects. In the meantime, I still have two other projects ahead of my fleet of cars that have been started and need to be finished before I can move on. It'll probably be a couple weeks before I can start the cars in earnest. Thanks again for your help. Once I get things up and in process you'll see some pics of your work.

Re: Took a little break from making sawdust

They have blackberries? I don't remember them having blackberries....

My wife and kids do love to go over there and pick strawberries, but we haven't been to pick blackberries. Every time I go to pick blackberries I get chiggers (red bugs).

They have row after row after row of blackberries. My arms and hands looked like I had gotten chiggers when we were done but the reality was they just got scratched up pretty good. The swelling and redness subsided by the next day.

Re: Took a little break from making sawdust

Good for you!
Hard to find homemade blackberry wine anymore.
I know from time to time at the hospital and in the fire circles they ask for people that might have some to help out cancer patients. Seems the blackberry wine has properties that seriously help after chemo.
I've never made any, but have made sure some was still good on occassion.
Maybe the local berries will ripen soon...

Re: Took a little break from making sawdust

Good on ya! I try to make at least 3 gallons a year. When I was a kid, (LONG ago) my grandma used to give us blackberry wine for the stomach ache. It works!

Re: Took a little break from making sawdust

Wow, my FIL read a part of a book about making "false wine" and poof, we have another batch started using the stuff we strained off of the first batch. On top of that he decided to go pick blueberries, so go figure... you guessed it, we have 2 gallons of blueberry wine brewing now.

Next week I'm starting to brew beer (Nut Brown) to recover from all this wine making. Beer - 1 week in the bucket and it's ready for bottling; 2-3 weeks in the bottles and it's ready for the fridge (and ultimately for consumption).

Wine - 1 week in the bucket, then straining off the fruit/stuff; 3 weeks in a secondary fermentor. Rack it, then wait another 3 months before bottling, then wait 9 months to 1 year for it to age, occasionally cracking open a bottle to make sure it hasn't turned to vinegar.
