Would you put 3 Cu yrds of soil in a borrowed F150? Is it too much?

second, anybody know of a place in the Pittsboro area that does topsoil and delivers for less than the $80 delivery charge that Poultry Villa on the 15/501 charges?

TIA

David, thats way too much for a F150. Three yards of dirt would weigh 8,000 -10,000 lbs. depending on the moisture content. Even if the truck could carry it, if you got stopped by a DMV man you would get a hefty fine.

All of the numbers I have seen on the weight of topsoil put a cu yrd in the neighborhood of 2000 - 2500 lbs, so 3 yards would definitely be out of the question for a 1/2 ton truck.

Do you know anyone who has a utility trailer you could borrow?

No, just friend with the truck. Looks like delivery it is, but $80 for 10 miles???? seems a bit steep.

I put 2 yards of mulch in my tacoma this summer, it's not a small truck, but it was a large load. I think 3 yards of soil would be way too much for it.

What am I missing? Why not make more than one trip?

It's just the time factor for borrowing the truck. I usually can have it for an hour or so on a saturday morning. Each trip with loading and unloading would be over a couple hrs each so that would be most of the day and I don't lke to push my luck with friends generosity.

David an F150 struggles moving it'self empty - don't try it - you'll bend the frame or break the springs that is if the bed don't sit on the back tires first. Get you a heavy duty tandem axle trailer and a tarp - center 1/2 the load over the tandem drop the dirt then go back of the the second 1/2 of the load (make two trips maybe 3 depending on if the ford will move that much at one time).

Thanks

I also have been reading that the MAX payload of this truck - 2007, V6 is somewhere in the region of 1600-1700 lbs that's including a tank of gas and occupancy so the true weight of "cargo" must be nearer the 1,000-1200 lbs so not sure I would even want to put 1 cu yrd in there??

David -- although $80 sounds like a high fee for delivery, it is worth the hassle and doesn't jeopardize your neighbor's truck nor your friendship with him if damage were to occur (let alone repair expenses). Many of us balk at these kind of costs, but in the long run, you're be happier you got it delivered at once. Just do it!

Not being a truck owner, It was just an idea, not really knowing what these things can haul and it turns out it's not as much as I thought! coupled with the fact that having just shovelled 4 cu yrds of top soil into a wheel barrow and pushed it up hill about 20 yrds - I had know idea dirt was that heavy!! I must be dumber than I thought and now much fitter! luckily it was only 90 Deg yesterday, if it had been hot I would have been in trouble

I had thought about that, but a) wasn't sure they would rent it unless you were buying something from them and b) based on what I know now, would I still need to make at least two trips? and therefore the rental cost would be at least 50% of the delivery cost with me doing more of the donkey work!!! Plus I would need to put gas in it I guess?

I wouldn't put over 2 yards in one of the HD trucks. I don't see how you can get 3 yards in a pick up. The most volume wise I have ever been able to do is 2 yards.

A dump bed trailer along with a pick up would work maybe rent one of those and get it all in one trip?

Just throwing out suggestions.
