Yesterday at work started pretty typical I had to unlock the gate to the Oxygen tanks for an ouside contractor. As i was ulocking the gate I smelled cigarette smoke when I turned to see where it was coming from this contractor had a lit cigarette in his mouth.
Now bear in mind we are standing just 25 feet from about 7000 gallons of Liquid Oxygen When I told him to put the cigarette out this clown gets an atitude with me. Resisting the urge to wring his neck I told him again and he keeps argueing telling me he knows the dangers bla bla bla. When I radioed my superviser for reinforcements this guy finally put it out.

Its funny that his attitude started changing when he saw not just my boss running out but my boss's boss with him along with security.

I hated to have to take it that far because I dont want to see the boy loose his job and dont know that he will but if that tank had have went off I expect it would have taken half of the hospital with it. This guy kind of put a personal twist on my tag line

Its useless to argue with an idiot. They will only bring you down to their level then beat you with their experiance.

Nice story Brian, Idiots abound and it's a shame that they can't live in a vacuum. This way the world would be safe from them. You did what you had to do, I previously worked with industrial gases and had people do things such as load hydrogen up while smoking, but I never had any one argue when told to put it out. Whatever happens to him is his own destiny, Thank God we're not watching what might have been on the 6:00 news.

BTW, I love your tag line.

Bryan,

That is a great story, thanks for sharing. If he didn't know any better, that would be one thing, but it sounds like he did, AND he got an attitude about it. That is just plain ignorant. Good for you, you did the right thing.

Bryan,

You did the right thing, calling in the reinforcements. This is the kind of guy who is due to win a Darwin Award. He needs to win one of them all by himself and not put the hospital on the evening news all across the country.

Ray

P.S., If you don't know what a Darwin Award is, try going here... http://www.darwinawards.com/

He did know better his company deals with gas level indicators and alarms. They are upgrading the medical gas alarm systems

Thats the way Survival Of The Fittest works. Nature has a way of taking care of things that don't quite fit in (just get rid of it).

The only problem with idiots like this is that they aren't always alone when they win the awards......unfortunately. I don't blame you one bit for calling for reinforcements.

The world would be a lot better place if we could just get rid of six idiots a day. Maybe we wouldn't have to have warning labels on everything, like the labels on wood chippers telling you not to put your hands in there. Well, if the thing cuts trees up, it makes sense that it will cut your hand up too; but for every stupid warning, there's a bigger idiot behind it that didn't know any better. Sorry, stupidity is a real sore point with me. I just don't know how half the world has stayed alive as long as it has.

My favorite is the warning lables that state "Avoid Death"...you would think that was a given

Not trying to hijack your thread here, but this is just a site I found related to my stupid warning labels comment. Here is the link. OK, I'm done hijacking now.

BTW, I also think you did right by making him put out his cigarette. I used to fill propane tanks at my old job, and I ran into the same thing. Except your guy didn't have an excuse, he was educated in the dangers, my customers weren't.

Do you mean like sticking your hand into a woodpile in the spring ?
