Well, the wind and rain took down a decent size branch from a tree in my back yard. Looks to me like it was rotting at the top, so it didn't take much to finish it off.

Well, that was just the beginning. Since I had the chainsaw out anyway ... I decided to do some overdue tree maintenance & removal (yeah, power tools!)

Ended up removing three other small trees in my back yard that were just creating an unbearable canopy over the deck and yard -- thus keeping the sun out. So... they are gone now. Forgot how much fun a chains could be! And now I might actually get some grass to grow back there!!

Now I need a chipper to get rid of this stuff ... anyone got one I can borrow??

I got a chipper you can borrow. Havent started it in about a year, need to make sure it runs ok. If you are serious about borrowing it let me know. 6 hp and will handle branches up to 1 inch I think.

Jeremy - you gotta give us details - like what did you yell right before the tree fell - was it "TIMBER" or "OH **** LOOK OUT"

If you grow grass you have to cut it

How about a nice natural area with lots of mulch

The yard is shaping up well.

Re: Storm Takes Down Big Branch ... I take down the rest!

Jeremy, sorry about the storm - I am glad nothing was damaged - when my wife and I left your house we stopped at a few other places on 85 then started home - before we got into Concord we seen some accidents on the SB side of 85 - some ppl ran off into the media and others behind them had slowed then the chain reaction started - ppl where slaming on their brakes and running into the media and hitting the steel cable right there in front of us - If the cable would have not been there I believe that ine of them could have hit us head on in the NB - Thank God for the cables

Phillip

There's already patches of grass in the spot that needs more ... so I mow it anyway -- if I can just get a little more of the green stuff to grow I can actually enjoy it without being a muddy mess.

1/2 of my lot is already natural area. It has it's perks, for sure, but the kids don't fancy it much for playing. I am, however, thinking about mulching part of it...

It's not very pretty, but I've seen some cool spongy stuff (recycled tires I think) around alot of the kid's jungle equipment around some of the parks. If you like grass, then go for it, but this is safe for falls and not as much upkeep.

I've been looking at that stuff. It is a rubber material and would be great around the play set. Unfortunately, it's expensive ... but maybe I can find a deal for buying in bulk.

You won't find it in bulk I've only seen it bagged, it costs around 10X the cost of a regular playground mulch. It is a great surface covering, but a play-set is temporary and what will you do with when your done with the play set. You'll have to haul it to the dumps. It's not recycling it's a value added waste product.
I highly recommend a Cypress chip mulch for a playground surface. It is wood chips vs. wood shreds so it's not a bunch of Pun-ji sticks, and being Cypress it decomposes much slower than the soft wood of Certified Play Mulch.

Honestly Honey, that will cost around $100 $150 $200, and I need a few more tools.

Might have to take you up on that ... I looked at renting a 35hp one, but they want $180 per day ... seems a bit high (?)
