I have been living in rural VA for a year now but the variety of flora and fauna here still amazes me. This morning I went to put the trash in the truck for a trip to the dumpster (a necessary chore here in the country) when I found this critter had stopped to rest on the apron in front of the shop.

I haven't seen one of those in a while! The last one I saw was green, but had the same general markings.

Makes me miss the country even more.

Wow, beautiful moth and great pic
I frequently see luna moths but they are bland compared to this one.

It is my understanding that Mother Nature provided exactly that kind of design to fool predators

The moth that stopped by yesterday had coloration resembling eyes to scare off predators. Today there was one drying it's wings on the side door to the shop that apparently used camouflage to hide from being somebody's lunch. This one had an uncanny resemblance to spalted maple. I had something to use for comparison because I just salvaged a root burl from a dead maple that had to come down

Nice Luna moth. Some get up to 8" across.

BTW: easy way to tell moth or butterfly - Moths have wings open at rest, Butterfly's wings are closed at rest.
