Re: Shop Foxes

They can actually become quite tame, but thats not to say it's a good thing.
In areas with a high concentration of coyotes, fox often become increasingly fond of more urban areas. Coyotes dominate the woods, and will kill a fox on sight.
Tidbit: Grays can, to varying degrees, climb trees. Reds do not.

You are very lucky Roger; enjoy while you can.... Wildlife is a disappearing thing in this world.

Re: Shop Foxes

I had a friend in Alabama who was licensed to own foxes. He had several nice grays, I petted one of them back when I lived over there. They can be quite vicious and turn on you even after many years of being a pet. That is one reason why you must be licensed to own them. He went through some kind of training in order to get his license. I'm not sure what it was or where one would look for such.

Re: Shop Foxes

In my neighborhood there are some people that have chickens. I been told that the fox has tried to reduce the chicken population, so I guess those people were not too happy with their fox.

Re: Shop Foxes

Thanks for sharing the pix. I really enjoy reading about all the wildlife we get to observe. I don't believe I've ever seen a gray fox not in captivity.

Re: Shop Foxes

I took Collin hunting squirrels one day several years ago and as we stood looking up in the trees we heard leaves rustling on the ground. We both looked at the same time and there was a little red fox walking straight toward us. It got within 10 feet before it saw us and stopped, it looked at us, we looked at it, we looked at each other then it decided to turn around and run.

Re: Shop Foxes

Just across the border in Virginia(forget which town) there is a fenced running ground where they persue fox with beagles, same as they do with rabbits at a conventional field trial. I've never attended but it's said to be great running for the beagles and for lovers of beagle music as well. Huge running pen, 1000 acres IIRC(always an iffy proposition).
