Shed some light please

Two things I don't get about North Carolina:

1. Why don't you park a car in the garage? In Texas, you park the car in the garage and set up the WW tools in the shed or the barn. And if you don't park the car in the garage or under a carport, you get your vehicle decorated by anything from pea to softball size hail. No hail here?

2. What is the deal with the stinking phone books? Yesterday 3 delivered to my door (thrown rather forcefully against a glass storm door)...today I got 3 more. It seems like every time I walk outside there are more and more out there. We've been in this rental house since November and I think we've gotten like 20 phone books.

(Don't get me wrong....I love North Carolina.)

I would guess that there is more room in TX for a barn or big shed. Most of the lots around here are too small for a big outbuilding. And then you have the cold, depending on where you were in TX. Winter cold and fog here makes a garage look nice for protecting and using your tools in the winter. And rain, we do get rain when we are not in a draught.

Occassional small hail, but then, isn't that what insurance is for?

And while summers are warm around here, they do not bake the paint off the car like they did when I lived in Waco, Harlingen, and Brownwood (fine Texas towns). Nor does the wind-blown sand here finely finish the bare metal.

Re: Shed some light please

Why do people in NC buy nice big shiny new trucks, and use utility trailers to bring home the five 2x4's and two pieces of OSB that they by at Lowes

I couldn't fit an 8 foot board into my shed, nor can I stand up in it gotta have the shop in the garage.

If you don't have five phonebooks in every room of your house, you might have to get up for one.

Re: Shed some light please

Maybe Texas has this too but in NC we have HOAs. I would love to do my woodworking in a shed but since I live in a HOA. No shed, trailer, boat etc. If you can't hide it in the garage you can't have it. HOA can be so bad that there was one that banded the display of the American Flag for a time. Before you rural folks jump in, Cary is not the only place with HOAs. Don't get me wrong HOA have good point too and I selected where I live at the time because it was the best place for my kids. All you parents know this. Now that they are 28 and 24and don't live at home wher I live does not matter.

As to the phone books when we first moved in, 1993, we told the nice Bell South lady we had 3 phones. To this day we get 3 sets (4 books in the set). All I can say is they all recycle.

Re: Shed some light please

There are two reasons cars are not parked in the garage:
1. How can you show off your ride to the neighbors if its hidden inside?
2. How else can you show you're not uppity like the neighbor with the Beemer?
An added side benefit, depending on where you live, is that it keeps the neighbors from having to peek in the windows to see what you came home from the store with.

There are two reasons for all the phone books:
1. If you live in the sprawling cancers that are the Triangle or Charlotte areas, they figure you not only need a set for each room that may have a phone, you also need a set for each vehicle (you DO have a cell phone, right?)
2: If you live in the rural areas, the phone companies get a charitable discount per book for helping out the underpriviledged. Their reasoning is that you can stack them in the outhouse and save money on that fancy rolled paper stuff. It originated with a bill lobbied for by Bell telephone in the late 1940's, finally made it through the state legislature in 2002, and will come up for review and revision in 2056.

Hurricanes: LOML was here for Floyd. I haven't been in any here, but went through Kate, Frances, Alberto, Dennis, Ivan and Opal in FL. and don't remember the names of the typhoons in Okinawa and PI, but two were Cat. 5.

If you park in the Garage how do your neighbors know you're home?
If you park in your garage where do your neighbors' (note plural!!!) cats sleep at night?
If you park in your garage where does the paper delivery person aim the paper?
If you park in your garage how does your car get cleaned? (no car washee in Concord for ~past year)

Fran, Floyd and Hugo he says with pride!!!

Re: Shed some light please

Maybe it's neighborhood specific. All my neighbors (in view of my house) and I park our cars in our garages. Of course, right now since I am doing quite a bit of remodeling, I am having to use my side of the garage as a temporary shop.

Hazel, Fran, and Floyd, along with a bunch of down rated tropical depressions. For you new comers (less than fifty years) Hazel was in 1954. (Hugo doesn't count as it was confined to western sections of the state.) Slept through Fran. Got up the next morning and fired up generator to see if I needed to go to work at my teaching job. I'm one of the lucky ones- I was born here. I didn't have to spend a lifetime getting here. What I don't understand about our transplants, is why they move here for our lifestyle, and then try to make it like where they came from. If that is the life style they want, why didn't they stay where they were? Got to get off my soap box now.

Re: Shed some light please

Bruce I remember my mom talking about walking home from school as Hazel was starting up (in Rocky Mt.)

Can't help with the phone books, I get em too.

As far tools in the garage, not any barns or sheds in my neighborhood. My choices are the garage or go rent somewhere.

Re: Shed some light please

In response to the the hail question,
No...that is not what insurance is for.
It's considered that famous insurance clause of "act of god" and the car is a total...of your expense.
I don't know what the rules are right now,but as of 10 years ago...
when the hail came you looked for a parking garage to pull in to when you were away from home.
I can't speak for Texas...never lived there, but I CAN speak for living in the Rockies. And cars entirely dimpled from hail was a common sight. And an unfortunate one.The body was a total, but the car was not.Insurance Co's gave themselves an out-clause from that one.You were stuck with that dimpled body of a car.

Hey - those of us from the western part of the state do not discount Hugo. I was at a meeting in downtown Charlotte when it hit. Woke up and went to the bathroom in the middle of the night and the water was sloshing in the commode! It was a long walk down the stairs to the lobby.

When I lived in Nebraska (gosh I hate saying that) and OKLA (yea!), you left you hail dented car in the hot sunlight the next day. Unless the dings actually chipped the paint, most of the dimples popped right back out to the original surface.
