I have literally emerged from a lost week.

I went in for a myelogram last Friday. This is where they put a needle in your spinal fluid, inject some dye and take x-rays of your spinal column to find out where discs are bulging, nerves are pinched, etc. If you ever are recommended to have this procedure done, ask the doctor if it's absolutely necessary!

After I was done (the needle was painful, BTW), I went home and felt fine until Saturday night, when the headaches started. I had to wait for most of this past week before I went back to the hospital to have a blood patch put in because the hole in the spinal sac wouldn't close. The intensity of the headaches were like nothing I ever experienced before in my life and most of the past week was pure misery. To do the patch, they have to put another needle in your back and they put some of your own blood back in there to plug up the leak. It seems to have worked, but I am off of lifting anything heavier than a book for at least a few days and am confining myself to bed.

If you are ever recommended to have this procedure, get a second opinion. I know that I will never go through THIS ever again!

I hope to get back to my projects soon and hope to make the crawl next month.

Steve

Steve, I'm right there with you! I've had 3, and they are not something I'd reccommend! But, it does give the docs a good look at what's going on.

I was fortunate not to have the headaches. You'll be in my prayers, Bro.

Wishing you a speedy recovery, Steve. Next time, ask if an MRI might not be a better, less invasive approach -- at least they supply ear plugs for the pinging that that subject you to!

My thanks to all for the good wishes!

Day three and no headache -- I think I'm out of the woods as far as the spinal headaches are concerned.

I did have an MRI but the results were not clear, so the doc ordered the myelogram and a CAT scan as well. That isolated the problem to C6-7. The bottom line now is that I seem to be able to manage the nerve pinch with a couple of mildly narcotic pills per day (darvocets - no lightheadedness at all), so the doc (a neurosurgeon) recommended I manage it that way for now, since surgery is not without its own risks.

I'm taking it really easy all weekend (and I'm missing the BIG ham radio fleamarket in Dallas this weekend as a result ) and I'm just grateful that those headaches are gone!

I hope to go out into the shop again next week and continue on some home improvement projects that are waiting for me. I'm enjoying the ability to mill my own mouldings instead of spending a fortune on them at the BORG.

Steve

Take care of that back, Steve. Back pain will put a stop to activities you never thought difficult, like tying your shoes, getting out of a chair, and more.
