A recent thread about fuel costs and shipping reminded me of this. I thought I'd post this for a little different perspective on what's out there.

World's most powerful diesel engine

Twice the efficiency, but hard to argue fuel efficient! Although, if you calculate based on tonnage moved vs. other methods...

Dennis, I wonder if they used compressed air to start it?

Jerrye- man, if I had that engine coupled to a generator I could put Shearon Harris out of business!

Scott, if you coupled that to a generator (which they probably do already) you'd have to have your own convoy of tankers. Bear in mind these things use #3 or higher diesel fuel - very gooey stuff.
That whole big engine thing is fascsinating. And this is basically a big Detroit 2 cycle diesel too.

It looks like it's being set up in a power plant atmosphere, but I can't imagine what the fuel(energy) costs would be. But as the saying goes "Energy isn't created it's converted", so what ever the costs to run it are justified in the end by the power coming out.

All that work to spin a shaft.......

I would love to go see it. I have gotten to check out a couple of factories in the past and am always amazed to watch the overall infrastructure.

Realize this is built to power CONTAINER SHIPS...and has 50%+ efficiency...and even at it's most economical operation still uses 1600 GPH.

Scott, do you have your own siding to allow railcar storage sufficient enough to operate your generator...or do you think you could get permitted for a large enough underground fuel tank?

Of course, you could always downsize to the 6-cylinder version...

Energy is energy 1600 GPH isn't too bad. When I worked at a coal burning plant producing 600 Megawatts an hour we used 250 tons of coal an hour.

Big machines are cool !
