| Finally, I got the rails & balusters nailed together for my front porch. Saturday morning, I started dismantling my current (now former) railing on my front porch. As with most projects, I ran into a few extra steps: the boneheads that put up the railing simply nailed it together & painted, without priming.
Among other things, the paint job was not extended to the 1) bottoms of the balusters, 2) where the balusters were nailed to the rails, and 3) the end of the rails. There was no fillet used, to water could just stand in the lower rails. Add to this the house was 5 years old when we bought it.
The top rails had no rot, but the same could not be said for the lower rails. The water rot extended from the ends of the lower rails to the spot where they were nailed to the posts.
I used Durham Putty to remedy the areas in the posts. not too large, not too deep. Just gonna prime the spots & paint white. The local mom-n-pop hardware had some Minwax filler w/ epoxy, but the small tube was in no way enough for all the container. They also had Staples brand (not the office supply store), and Elmer's, but I hadn't heard much about the reliability of either brand.
I had to replace the two lower step posts, as the ends were no primed/painted, and were sitting on the concrete sidewalk. They are now cut, notched to fit around the bottom step, and thoroughly primed.
So I get to add this to the top of next weeks adventures. The only cutting left is for me to cut the needed fillet.
