Jon,

Sorry to hear about the itch. My wife says that the 'oatmeal' bath powders you can pick up at the the drug store will offer some help. And if you're at the drug store anyway... might as well ask the pharmacist to make a recommendation.

I know of one nursery where I will not shop because of the poison ivy that was ground up into their triple shredded mulch.

Ivy doesn't affect me, but my roommate got a cycle of steroids when he got it bad while we were camping in California's Los Padre National Forest many years ago. don't think the 'cure' has changed.

Ban Roll-On is the best I have found OTC. Don't know about using it around the eyes though. I seem to recall that a doctor told me about using this many years ago.

Jon-
I usually have a bad reaction to poison ivy when I get it.....I go ahead and go to the doctor and get a cortizone shot which clears it up quickly (I don't have much luck with over-the-counter medications for poison ivy). If you do go to the doctor, try to get the shot instead of the oral medication....the pills don't work as fast (for me at least).

Definitely go to the doctor if you have it around you eyes. You don't want to start rubbing a bunch of stuff near your eyes.

Hope it works out for you.

I never had it before, when other people did get it I was always fine.I would have said I couldn't get it as well.
2 weeks ago I chainsawed a tree that fell into a neighbor's yard.Of course the base of the tree was wrapped in heavy vines. Not thinking twice I cut through everything.
My legs and arms were covered a few days later with poison ivy.I tried all the so-called remedy creams off the shelf and nothing did a thing.
I went to the doctor and was put on 60 mg of Prednisone. They agreed I had the worst case they had seen in a while.By 48 hrs in to the meds I did see a great relief.I'm already 7 days in to the meds and tapering down the mg's.
Caladryl worked best in addition to the steroids. And a Benadryl at night to keep from scratching in your sleep. That's what I was doing all night long.
I won't be volunteering my chainsawing services so quickly from here on out. That will teach me to be nice.
I could not imagine it on the face or eyes.
I would suggest seeing the doctor.

Jon,

Sorry to hear about your itch. I got it in my lungs about 10 years ago burning some brush in my backyard. Got it so much when I was a kid, I kinda got immune to it.

I don't have a cure, however, when you start itching real bad, rinse the area off with some really hot water. Hottest tap water you can stand on the area. It will itch really bad while your rinsing the area, but then it will stop for quite a while. This will keep you from itching non stop.

Sorry to hnear about your rash Jon. I personally have had little reaction to poison ivy, but my kid brother used to get it bad even if he was upwind.

Hope you feel better.

I get into poison ivy quite often in my job. I found a homeopathic remedy named "Poison Ivy Pills" at the local drug store.(NOT CVS, Rite-Aid, Walgreens etc.) It seems to work pretty good.Try www.homeopathyworks.com. Hope this helps!

IF it's around your eyes or really bad, go to the doctor for a shot. For mild cases, Benedryl helps

A Festool sander will get rid of any problems related to Poison Ivy. Doesn't matter what grit you use. Actually, it doesn't really alleviate any of the symptoms, but you just don't care anymore. You've got Festool.

Sorry to hear about your situation. If it doesn't get better soon or your eyes are hurting, then definitely see a doctor. You may want to put socks around your hands (with rubber bands) while you sleep, to avoid scratching. There is a medicated gel you can get that contains benadryl, it really helps cool the skin.

It probably is poison ivy, especially if you have been somewhere you could have picked it up. But there is a small chance is could be shingles. Did you have any pain or burning before the rash appeared?

"Doctors can distinguish shingles from chickenpox (or dermatitis or poison ivy) by the way the spots are distributed. Since shingles occurs in an area of the skin that is supplied by sensory fibers of a single nerve--called a dermatome--the rash usually appears in a well-defined band on one side of the body, typically the torso; or on one side of the face, around the nose and eyes. (Shingles' peculiar name derives from the Latin cingulum, which means girdle or belt.) If a diagnosis is in doubt, lab tests can confirm the presence of the virus."

I had PI so bad a couple of years ago , when the Dr. saw me, he smiled and said "Now thats impressive".
Get the cortisone shot, then go to a natural food store and get these little sugar pills for PI. they look like the come in a chapstick looking container, you'll take them for about a week, then you take the after PI sugar pill. They have (i Think) 1 0/0 PI in them.
I didn't believe at first, but it is the best cure I've found in 35 years.
Good Luck
