I was thinking about going to Hickory to the extravaganza Saturday but the loml has other plans for me!. She told me a while ago that she had purchased a flight on the EAA B-17 Bomber @ the Asheville Airport for me on that day!Don't worry, it will have happened and there will be Pix! Talk about a major gloat! I can not wait! ! I was wanting to buy a flight for my father the year before he passed but couldn't come up with the cash, but I know that he will be with me on Saturday!

Duh! Klingspore is next weekend. Maybe since I'll be near, I will come to the fall gathering! If anyone there sees a big airplane in the sky between 10:15AM and 10:40AM give me a wave!

You've gotta come by the gathering now! You can't tell us that you're going to be that close after something that cool and not share!!

I would love to do that. I was able to take a flight on a '29 Ford Tri-motor in August. You will have a blast. Take many many pictures.

That plane was here in Fayetteville 6-7 years ago, IIRC. I got to climb all over the plane with my son, with LOML watching nervously. still don't have the money to take ride in one, though. There was a Beechcraft pilot there, and as we watched the B-17 take off, he was shocked with how much of the runway they actually use for the old bird. Let's say it is a very gentle take off.

Enjoy the ride!
By all means, you will be less than 5 miles driving from the pig pickin some come on over!
A couple years ago I worked part time as a firefighter at the Asheville airport and frequently neat things like the B17 would come in.
I was out on one of the crash trucks and 'happened' by before they left. The pilots were milling about and talked with us and gave 2 of us the nickel tour- for FREE~

Got a load of pictures in the plane and more from the runway while they taxied and got clearance and left. Somewhat of a unique perspective from the vantage point on the taxi way crossover.
Can't even list all the neat planes I got up close with there. Guess the oddest was the day the tower called and said they had a C5 on short final. Since Asheville doesn't have those because of weight and the asphalt runway we were skeptical, but sure enough a hige galaxy did a series of fly overs....

Two of my most interesting encounters were at two airports in England. The first at Bournemouth and the tower told me I was "Number two to the departing Lancaster"!!! I was in a small Cessna at the time!!

The second was flying to a very small WWII airport for lunch. I was told as I was entering the circuit to be aware of "non radio, Spitfire and Messerschmidt in the circuit)!!! This was in 1992!!
