Today I was wandering around my laptop attempting to organize some pics to finally post when this popped up and things halted:

Parser Message
Value creation failed at 'line 521 (complete with red X)

The result being I am unable to access add/delete programs or set program seetings or defaults. I am not a total puter newbie but have never had a "parser" message, parser sounds like it should be the name of a woodworking tool!!! Any of our IT savvy members have any suggestions ?

Laptop is a Compaq Presario running Windows XP

A "parser" is nothing fancy or new ... but just a way to step through another file, or code, and make it something you can work with usually.

Try to reset your WIndows XP theme to the original, and then try to reproduce the error (a tip I found researching the net)

A parser is a computer program that processes a file. It expects the file to have a specific format (or "grammar"). If the file deviates from the format, it gives a parser error.

Enough technobabble. It's an extremely poor error message that might help the programmer figure out what's wrong, but not the user.

A quick Google search suggests a possible solution: http://www.jsifaq.com/SF/Tips/Tip.aspx?id=8856

(Note to self: When replying and taking a break, check whether someone else has already answered the question when you get back, rather than repeating the answer.)

Thanks guys !!! a quick 10 second fix. I reset the theme to Windows XP and all seems to be well now. I am not going to try and figure out why the modified theme used by Compaq/HP suddenly was incompatible, it makes my brain hurt to try and sort that out.
