I did a search on router bits, Google included some results from sawmillcreek.org. Imagine my surprise when those links took me to one of those generic ad-revenue generating web pages (see screenshot attached below). Did anyone else see this, or is my DNS hacked?

They are having what the owner says is a temporary problem. Seems he forgot to pay the domain registrar the annual fee and the domain registrar took them off line. The owner says that they should be back soon.

I don't know what you call it, but it is getting more and more common to do a Google search only to end up with a list of other search provider services. It is really a pain. I'm not sure but I think these secondary sites buy space or search term priority from Google.

I recently I a search on pnuematic cylinders and got more than a half dozen "Gobal Spec", "ThomasNet", "IndustrialQuickSearch" AND "IQS"- same thing!, "DirectIndustry", and other secondary search sites within the first two pages of results.

We used to have cybersquatters - people that bought names that matched existing companies. Then came the speculators that bought domains in the hope of selling them, like wine.com, jobs.com etc. The secondary searching you mentioned is indeed very common, especially with "typo" web sites (compare rigid.com and ridgid.com).

The latest trend seems to be buying a likely name, actually creating content/ useful links to attract real traffic, and then selling it. Brings more money than just the name.

But this is simply a case of someone forgetting to pay the bill. Funny......

Something funny going on here, their whois record id "not found' I think their maybe a DNS issue on top of their problems.

FYI, I like smc. I think their site is a good thing, not us, but still good. I really hope that they can get back up.

That's the problem with Google....they return the results of their paying customers first....the thought being that most people aren't going to go beyond the first couple of pages before they click on something. Everyone thinks Google is such a great company/resource but they ignore the fact that Google controls the search results and only returns the search results they want you to see (i.e. their paying customers).

Charles, I'll bet if you hit your refresh button you will -- I just tried and got the same screen as Bas. BTW, SMC just added Advertising on the site -- since they get over 1,000,000 hits a day, it got too costly for Keith to run on voluntary donations. I agree with Steve Coles that it is a good site -- I see several of us there on a regular basis (Alan, Bas, Bruce [junqueol] to name a few).

But, they've banned at least one person who apparently got under some big folks skin -- Bill Pentz.

There is definitely a lot of good info on SMC, and considering the sheer volume of posts and users, it's managed pretty well. Not the same relaxed atmosphere, but hey - not every place can be TFWSOTI.

BTW, you can access the site via the IP directly - http://70.169.135.35
It could take a while before all the DNS servers pick up the refresh.....

I think he might hold the record or something for getting banned by the most forums

And SMC's Jim Becker knows everything and owns every tool worth owning

All the forums occasionally have something of interest to offer. I selectively surf WoodCentral, SMC, WoodNet, but rarely post on any but North Carolina Woodworker and TWW. I was even amongst the many who were banned at least once from the old Badger Pond.
