We need a couple stacks of old newspapers for the garden.

Anybody coming to Jeff's wood run have some to spare?

Mike,

I'll bet most people don't know why you want it.

I use it every year, works great and a whole lot less work.

We're putting in a couple new raised beds and we need the paper to line the bottom of the boxes. We stopped taking the local paper so I don't have any lying around.

Mike,

For years now my wife and I have used old newspapers for weed control in the garden.

After planting and seeds are up, we put 6 sheets of newspaper down, covering everything but the newly emerged seed. Then place mulch, we use the leaves we've chipped up during the fall, on top of the newspaper to hide it from view.

The newsprint is too thick for weeds to come up through as they sprout, but water and fertilizer have no problem getting to the garden plants. We never have to weed or hoe all summer long. Come late fall, the newspaper has disintegrated and become more organic material for the garden.

Just stay away from the color ads on the slick paper. They are usually printed with an ink that may contain lead.

Jim

We grow in raised beds, the newsprint is in the bottom of the bed, then compost then top soil. We never have weeds in the beds. The beds are easy to turn under at the end of the season. Do a search for "square foot gardening".

That is exactly what I do as well, right down to the chipped leaves . Works like a champ ! As a side note, the News & Disturber is printed with soy ink , but I still do not use the color slicks
