Some time back I made a post about my fondness, and on-going search for, "old time" hardware store, for lack of a better term.

Along those lines, today I visited the Carpenter Farm Suppy at the end of Carpenter/Upchurch road. I had been there once some time ago, but it was a dash in and out trip.
Very cool place, circa, the early 1900's maybe, theres a date over the door but I can't recall it.
Like stepping back in time going in there, literally! Nice folks too.
You can't help but notice the dis-similarity of the "old/new" atmosphere driving to the store, huge brand new homes are crowding in quick.
Worth a visit if you happen to be in the area.
Stores of that ilk will only get more and more sparse I suspect.

I like those stores myself. Closest thing to one of them today is Tractor Supply, but it isn't close.

I went to an auction of one of those stores/lumber yards that was closing down. I got some good buys, but it was very depressing......

Tractor Supply recently opened a store in Fuquay, but, to be honest, it's about the most poorly tended store, stock-wise, I've ever been in.....

We have one... right near Stock on US 1, south of Holden's BBQ and way, way north of our pair of BORGs. I got a flyer in the mail good for $10 off a $25 purchase, but didn't find the time to get in there. Go see what it's all about, while you're on your way to Lowes for discounted power tools.

The tablesaw store in Knightdale is pretty well stocked but not very organized. Sort of a "KMart of Hardware" IMHO

Tom, I grew up not far from that area. My grandfather would sometimes buy his chicken feed from that very store. For the first time in about 5 years I went down Hwy 55 from Durham to Apex last weekend. Talk about depressing. Houses were moved/demo'd, the road is now 4 lanes, and the pond we use to go fishing in had been been filled in for future development. Some call it progress. I don't care for "some"

Tom, I bought my big Stihl chainsaw from Dale Carpenter back in 2001. You're right - it's a great store.

Another great "old timey" hardware store is in the old downtown section of Vass (between Sanford and Southern Pines). It's right up there with Carpenter's Farm Supply in terms of "coolness".

Did you see the old post office in Carpenters? It's orginal back from the turn of the century when they provided "contract" service for the USPO.

My info may be way out of date (maybe 9 or 10 years since my last visit) but there was ahardware store in Bunn that was the most awesome old time store I had been in for many years. We had a small place at Lake Royale back when we just had my oldest daughter (after the triplets were born we had to sell it; it was too small and I needed money for other stuff, like adding on to my primary residence) and I had brought a bunch of stuff from the closest borg for some project I was working on and was short just a couple of items. We decided to go into Bunn for lunch and see if there was a hardware store. There was. My wife had to drag me out of there (took her 2 or 3 tries). It had numerous nooks and crannies and they had several items that they only stocked 1-5 of, so it had an amazingly large number of different things. I bet I saw 50 things that I had not seen for sale at a retail store for 20+ years.

There's a hardware store down the block and across the street from the State fairgrounds in Raleigh. The name of it is Burke Brothers. I found out about it from North Carolina magazine. It's very cool, old, and full of everything. If you can't find something you need, just ask, it's in there.

The largest and most complete hardware store I have ever been in is in Lexington. It covers an entire city block and has three levels. If you cannot find it they will get it for you, the name is Lanier True Value Hardware. They have been there since before I was born. Just thought I would throw in my two cents.

Just for reference heres the old original post:

http://www.ncwoodworker.net/forums/s...ead.php?t=3577

Scott, I have indeed been in the Vass store, awesome place.
Truth be told however, there were a couple of oldtimers sitting around playing checkers on a cracker barrel, and I thought they might have been "hired for the role" so to speak...
But, if they were actors, they were good.....REAL good.....

I'd like to get out that way again, just to snoop around......

Tom,
I agree, Carpenter is a cool place
One of the planned I-540 exchanges is close by and dramatically increased the growth in that area.

Scott,
Unless I'm thinking of the wrong Carpenter, Dale died last year. He was quite a character.

Roger

edit: CRS strikes. I was thinking of Arthur Carpenter -- NOT Dale!

Roger, I was unaware that Dale had passed away. Gosh, he was around my age! (late 40's). Indeed you are correct regarding him being a character.

Jimmy, I've been to Burke Brothers more than once - definitely a good store.

Newtowood - I'll have to check out that store in Lexington - it sounds way cool!
