If anyone else here plays tennis, I have a stringing machine and I will string North Carolina Woodworker members racquets for free if you provide the strings or I can teach you how. The stringer I have is a very inexpensive purchase if you play regularly. And if you have ever had your racquet restrung at a proshop, then you know it is not something you want to pay for on a regular basis when someone who doesn't care for the quality of the job is doing it.

Wow, cool! But what can you do about the cracks in the frame of my racket?

They say that woodworking is a good anger management tool.
Maybe you can make a wooden racquet...if made out of the right wood, it wouldn't splinter (it would have a little give when you slammed it on the ground).

Will - I do get out on a tennis court regularly - notice I did not say I actually played the game, that would be overstating my case. Nevertheless the times do come when re-stringing my racket is in order.

I may take you up on the offer someday. I take that I can just buy the string at Dick's or somewhere and use that? I had never considered this possibility before.

Thanks,

Henry

Henry,

You have to find out if they include stringing in the price of the strings. Many times stores like Dick's build in the price for stringing and then "string for free" ... and some of the technicians do very poor jobs IMHO. They don't usually discount the strings though if you don't get the racquet strung.

Stores: Dicks, Golfsmith (just opened in Raleigh last season), Stringers.
Also you can sometimes buy strings from the place that you play. (Either a club proshop or even Millbrook park in Raleigh).

Although I generally find better deals online especially if you have a string that you like and can buy a few at a time:
www.tenniswarehouse.com - they also have a racquet demo program where they will ship you up to 4 racquets for a week to try before you buy one and you just pay shipping.
www.golfsmith.com - they have online deals that aren't in the store
ebay of course and also craigslist
