I had a bit of good news this past week.
I got accepted to a CCNA mentoring program at work.
Only 150 people worldwide get in so I feel pretty lucky.

They pick up the check and all I have to do is an 18 week heavy training program.

Looks like my woodworking will be on hold for the next few months while I go through this.
Of course I will still be on here ....but probably no new projects for me until I finish this program.

I am looking forward to it though.

Congratulations! I am sure you will do well. I know it feels good to be one of very few picked for that.

Michael - congrats on your acceptance! Can you elaborate on what a CCNA mentoring program is all about? Thanks.

Sure Scott,
Basically, it is my company putting together and offering a training program similar to what these ECPI type groups offer.
CCNA is a cert that Cisco has. Cisco is routers.
The CCNA is pretty nice to have in the tech world.
It has gotten a lot harder in the last few years to pass the test too...

What my company has set up is....

There are weekly classes/lectures..homework....remote labs with actual, not simulated equip to practice on, books and a website for all the students to get together, ask questions, offer ideas, etc...
Work gives me some time but most is after work.
They estimate 15+ hours/week after work for my studies....

The company even picks up the tab for me to take the CCNA test when it is done.

Good luck Mike and congratulations. The really good point of this is that you won't be able to swoop in on all the Craigslist bargains, and some of us may have a chance.

CCNA certification will always look primo on your resume'!!!!:eusa_dan c

Just before I retired, we looked exhaustively for network engineers with this type of knowledge and supporting paperwork.

Mike,

Congrats!! That's a terrific opportunity. I remember early in my career, I asked an old-timer... 'How do I get to be rich and famous?'. His answer was find a niche. Find something that no one else can do or is trained to do, maybe something no one else wants to do. With that kind of certification, you'll be in the area of 'what no one else can do'. Best of luck.

Congrats Mike, I don't understand all those acronyms, but they sure have a lot of letters. I am sure that this will be a boost to your career, so I am happy for you, even if it sounds like you won't be droppin' by to visit for a while
