Well tonight I might have acquired a new shop dawg. He hasn't been put to the "shop" test yet, but his temperament is extremely good.
My wife's cousin who is frequently in and out of jail and has bad history of drug abuse, had another friend of like high civil and moral qualities drop off this dog to be taken care for a few days. That friend hasn't returned for his dog after about 3 weeks. My wife's cousin can barely take care of himself let alone a dog. So after it was found tied out in the yard today without any food or water, the cousin admitted to my MIL that he couldn't handle the dog. After repeated phone calls to the owner which were met with no answer or a hang-up, my MIL decided that the dog need a better home. We met them this evening half way between Wilmington and Clayton. Ava is so excited she could barely go to sleep. My wife is happy because she has always wanted a dog. And I am pretty cool with it because he likes to chase cats (actually he is very good with them).
So without further ado, I would like to introduce Malibu, my new prospective shop dawg -

He's a big sweetie

Dave

Dave, congrats on the new fleahound! He looks like he has a great personality.

Let me know if you need any of his parts removed... I'll put in a good word for you with the Doc!

It never ceases to amaze me when I read of people abusing a dog -- all they ever do is give unrequited love... You've done a great thing to rescue him from a pitiful fate (BTDT x 2).

Man that's a cute dog! And hats off for 'rescuing' him, I'm not quite the animal lover my wife is but tying up a dog in this kind of heat without water....well let's just say this post would get seriously moderated if I weren't so busy looking at tool deals right now.

Malibu - good name. Let's hope he doesn't mind power tools.

Good thing he gets along with the cats. Although my dogs in their old age have gotten too complacent, the youngest cat now sticks his face in the dog food bowl while they're eating!

Awesome Dave and he is a pretty one . Now just go here

http://www.lab-retriever.net/board/index.php?

Post your rescue story and you'll be one of their heros. Labs are great pets but remember they are full of energy and can be pretty rambunctious. Check out a copy of Marley and Me by John Grogan heres the link to his website. Its a great story.

Malibu looks quite content in his new home. Did I mention they like to chew. I love animal rescue stories

Congrats on the new dawg! We might not have our newest member for long - he's jumping the 4' fence. Yesterday the neighbors caught him, but if he goes awol when no one is looking who knows. I don't know what to do (shy of putting in a taller fence which isn't an option right now) to break him of this, and if we don't I think sooner or later he will really be gone.

Yours looks like a sweety!

ConROCKulations on your most recent shop "acquisition". Someone to keep Ava, the elves, the Shoppe Widow, and you company for as long as Malibu lives! And dogs do make great companions...though I am partial to my cats.

Another conROCKulations for stepping up to the rescue. I used to know a lady that worked with APS in Durham, specifically with rescues. She had a Doberman once that was 70% normal size, and completely broken of spirit, due to abuse. Only Dobie I've ever seen that ran from everything and everyone. Sad.

Like Bryan said, Labs are energetic. Run him regularly. It helps. Daughter & her husband have one!

Dave, nice "pre-pound" rescue. If the cousin's friend ever remembers he had a dog, he will be glad to know it has a home where it is welcome.

Cool Dave! Congratulations! Couple words of warning, labs are great at clearing off a table with their tails so keep everything fragile out of the way! Glad Malibu found his way to you!

Dave,

Terrific. You totally rock for taking in a critter that needed help. My Lab was abused before she decided to live with us.

Ed's right... you have to make sure you build coffee tables that are just above the swing plane of the wagging tail. Cans of soda or glasses of juice are no match for the tail.

Roxy is the only Lab I've ever had, so I'm no expert.. but my experience is different than Bryan's. Roxy has never chewed anything she wasn't supposed to chew. Although, I can see the potential. I give her one of those chewy sticks each noon... the kind that's supposed to last for hours, if not days. They last her about 2 minutes.

Ray

Congratulations Dave, he strongly resembles a four legged resident of my sister's house where I bunked for a few months before moving south. I thoroughly enjoyed Rollie's company and has been said they give unquestioning loyalty and affection

Congratulations Dave on the new "shop dawg"! He is a beauty. Can't help but love a lab. Of all the dogs I've had the pleasure to have around here, my labs were the ones that showed the most loyalty and affection. You can see it in their eyes. Complete devotion! My little black female I have now is the most energetic lab I've had. She would drive me crazy in the shop. She would probably chew up everything in there. Would have to watch her for a while and stop that. But, she is a sweetie! Enjoy, he'll make a great companion and shop dog!

Looks like a nice dog Dave. One thing I would strongly recommend since you have kids is to be very mindful of the dogs reactions to your family. I have a friend that worked for animal control and had many stories of very nice dogs that could be easily set off unexpectedly. Two test they did, and I strongly recommend you do, are:

1. See how he reacts to you touching his hind quarter when you are behind him.
2. How he reacts if you pull his food bowl away while he is eating.

Also do anything you think your kids might do like pulling his ears, tail, etc

Any aggressive movements while doing these things could show deeper problems that might be a danger to your family.

Good luck

Todd
