From an undisclosed source . . .

"Starting in 2009 all new screws produced in China will be in metric sizes and the threads will be reversed (counterclockwise to tighten) so it will be easy to tell the difference."

This is supposedly a prelude to the US going completely metric by 2010.

I checked snopes.com and could find no info to dispute this.

Also, I understand it will be marketed via text messages to cell your phone (now that the numbers are publicly available) and they must be purchased with Amero's.

I graduated from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1983. We had something called the "Tute Screw." It was threaded so that no matter how you turned it, clockwise or counter-clockwise it went in. That way you always got screwed (Imagine opposing threads angled in opposite directions).

On the plus side, they will _finally_ allow corner nails here in the U.S. and Canada (they've been available in Europe since the late seventies). Corner nails are perfect for butt joints where the fastener has to be hidden. The corner nails will be available in galvanized, stainless and brass.

A corner nail is like a regular nail, but bent at 90 degrees in the middle. Let's say you want to make a butt joint. Normally, you'd put the two pieces together, and nail from the outside through one piece into the other. That's great, but the fastener is visible. With a corner nail, you can join the two pieces without anyone seeing it on the outside.

Old joke in Holland. They'd send apprentices to the hardware store for corner nails. The reply would always be - "Sorry, we're all out, but Joe's might have some". Joe's store would be on the other side of town of course, and _just_ sold the last box not an hour ago. So Joe would send them to Mike, Mike to Jim etc.
