Due to a recent job change I need to purchase term life and also need short/long term disability insurance coverage. Til now I have worked for large companies that offered life insurance at a decent rate and provided disability coverage free of charge.

I realize that this is WAYYYY off-topic but I would appreciate any help that you could offer. I would like to find competitive rates from reputable companies.

BTW I have a new found respect for anyone who has changed jobs late in life. I am in my fourth week and have just now begun to settle down. The company I joined is absolutely top-notch!!

Chuck, since I don't know you, no offense is meant.

If you're over 50, I'd take a look at AARP's plans. They can be competitive.

Try to find a broker in insurance rather than an agent. A broker can issue policies from a lot of different companies and he will know the comparison of those companies. I just applied for supplemental insurance through a broker today---he did save me some money on the same coverage offered by various companies. He is in the Charlotte area though.

Chuck, LOML and I have been pleased with our association with IOF Forresters, and I carry Banker's Life for Short Term Disability insurance, even though my employer offers it now, I like the portability of it. I forget what search engine I was using, but I also found very good rates for term life insurance from Boston.... Bank? Life? Mutual? I don't recall the name, besides the Boston part.

I am also a USAA member, and am very pleased with their services, but my wife liked the Foresters agent...

Ameriprise Financial has some competitive products that are worth considering. Good luck!

You might want to visit Clark Howard's web site (www.clarkhoward.com) and see what his recommendations are. He is on the radio, morning and afternoons in the central NC market. 680 in the mornings and 101.1 in the afternoons. I think 101.1 does streaming on the web.

At least in some situations it is possible to continue disability insurance, with the same insurance company, as you had with your previous job.

I know we have disability insurance from when my wife worked for Wachovia. The rates are very reasonable. I think we received info direct from the insurance company after my wife left Wachovia. Your previous company HR department should be able to help you.
