I did the same thing as Jim when I went cold turkey. I must have chewed to wood pulp hundreds of acres of trees. I quit at 11.50 PM on December 31, 1974. My goal was not to smoke in the year 1975. I carried the same partial pack in my shirt pocket for 3 weeks. Everytime I said I was going to smoke "just one" I then said no because then I couldn't ever say that I never smoked in 1975. It was a mental crutch that, along with the toothpicks, worked for me. I went from 2 1/2 packs per day to zero and haven't touched one since. My kids were small then and my motivation was that I wanted to see them grow up. I've seen them grow up and now am enjoying my grandchildren. I have recently lost a lot of weight and my motivation was that I wanted to see my grandchildren grow up. The concept is the same....be motivated, desire it with all your heart, and believe, without any doubt, it will happen and you'll be successful. You've got to have all 3 of those things for your dream to come true. I wish you the very best of luck. As has been said by many here, if you need encouragement just let us know

Tracy,

Sorry, got in here a little late. GOOD FOR YOU!

I've smoked since I was 16 and usually about a pack/day. It is a filthy and disgusting habit and I am ashamed that I do it. Especially with cancer running in the family. I will be trying to quit at some point in the near future. I hope you'll be there to help me through it. From what I've heard, you have to change things. People I know that have quit have gone as far as taking a different route to work. Excercise will also help a lot. If you smoke more when you drink (like me), might want to kick that for a while also. I've heard that quitting caffeine will also help quite a bit. Good luck to you. Stay STRONG!

Trent

Tracy,

Yeah, it is tough... but it WILL get better. I know. And yes, you really can do it. I know. I was between 3 and 4 packs per day when I quit ... in 1976.

Stay strong. If you do happen to have a moment of weakness and light one up remember that it's just a misstep... NOT a change in direction.

Tracy,
May the force be with you!
I smoked for 7-8 years and it's amazing how fast you go from 1/2 pack to 3 packs a day. After a couple of nonsmoking weeks you will enjoy the positive rewards of taste, smell, and breathing. A few months later that becomes the "norm" and will power becomes very important. Use whatever method works for you, even if it takes several attempts.

Roger

I quit twice. Short version. First time in Germany, five packs a day. Started again in Nam, in two weeks, five packs a day. Quit in about about '71-'72, or thearabouts. Was so hungover even the thought of a cigarette made me ready to heave. I would NOT recomend this method. BUT, gut thru one day, and every day for awhile, the mantra of the day was, "Got thru the first day, can get thru this one.". The first day is the hard one. You ain't gonna go out and run and jump and play, but you will definitely feel better. Nasty habit. Now I have no bad habits at all.

Just checking back in to let you know I'm thinking of you and wishing you much strength.

Read Terry's post over and over. If that doesn't convince you, PM me and let's talk.

Good luck and God bless.

You CAN do this!

Good luck, a smoker myself for about 20 yrs and quit Jan 1 2005.

It WILL make a difference in your health, and in many ways that you don't notice just like in ways you do.

Congratulations -- now take a nice deep breath of clean, clear air and continue doing just that for the rest of your life -- and you'll be able to smell things like never before!!

Smoked for twenty one yrs. Quit cold turkey. After 14 yrs., I still get an urge for a cig at times. Try to keep as far away from the smoke as much as possible. Dr.'s advice. Have lost 1/3 of my lung capacity and breathing can get pretty difficult during the really hot and humid summer days. Just stay indoors on those days. Trust me, YOU CAN QUIT!! Your health depends on it.

GOOD LUCK

Hang in there.

I quit smoking cigars in mid December - I was smoking 6 cigars/day. I used the generic nicotine patches. I was fine until beginning of March then started bumming/smoking a few cigarettes at work, maybe 5 or 6 a day. Funny, I didn't smoke at home on nights/weekends but last weekend I got a few cravings.

Friday morning I made the decision to just stop altogether. I was afraid they'd start getting too good to me. Back on the patch for a few weeks just to eliminate the cravings. I can tell you I don't have ANY cravings using the patch system.

Keep the goal in sight and stick to it. Reward yourself for measureable progress at selected time intervals. You deserve it and it's cost justified.
