I thought of going to tour northern California, then the wildfires squelched that idea.

Then I considered going to the Great Dismal Swamp; the guy who runs the boat tours in NC retired, and there is the matter of the wildfires in eastern NC.

Airfare has gotten outrageous, while the customer service has nosedived. So i think it better to enjoy something I can drive to in less than a day.

I may settle for a long weekend of Carolina Mudcats baseball in August, but the way my luck is running, a hurricane would cancel all games!

LOML & I took a 'staycation' the week of the 4th. Really enjoyed sleeping late in our own bed & not worrying about packing & driving somewhere (or getting 'made up' to eat breakfast). We even got some painting done in the basement! Stopped a time or 2 to get in the pool & even went out to eat! We like to see new places too, but just decided to de - stress a little @ home this summer. Maybe we'll get up to the mountains this fall. I hear gas should be back to around $3.50/gal. by then.

Staycations are always nice, No pressure, no deadlines, No motels, etc. Thinking about one this year myself!!!!

Staycations have never worked for me, unfortunately. I almost always spend time thinking about house projects, and if I clear my mind of them the LOML helps remind me.

ps. Go Mudcats !

The only way it worked for us was to lay out some ground rules beforehand. The painting project wasn't that large & we both agreed it was the only thing we'd tackle work wise. It definitely has to be a thing both of you can agree on or it turns into a stressfest. No rest there. If ya can't make it work, pack the bags & fire up the Ford I say.

Tom: Cruise on up to Abdington, VA, stopping along the way in Mt. Airy for lunch at Snappy Lunch.

Get a room at the Martha Washington Inn. Beautiful furnishings. Take in a play at Barter Theater. Have dinner in one of the great local restaurants, and be home the next evening.

It's all good!

As Dennis said stay-cations need rules. Our rules are no work / no chores after lunch.

Staycations have never worked for me. I've allways worked way too hard and ended up going back to work to get some rest.

We have been to Pipestem State Park ooverloking the Bluestone river gorge in WV several times and enjoyed it alot. Probably about 2 1/2 hours drive from you and close to several othe WV State Parks. Beautiful country up there and you can take a rafting trip down the New River Gorge.

I love staycations. I do end up working around the house, but only on those things I like to do, like spend all day making sawdust. If I don't feel like doing anything, I don't.

Interesting predicament Tom. I just took a little vacation up to the OBX for a few nights. The orignial plan was to go for 4 nights, but after having the campsite flooded out by gale-forced winds and thunderstorms (that always happened at night), we decided to get a cabin instead (which costs more). So we cut the trip short by a night to save some money. It was a nice relaxing time though. Not too far away either, so gas isn't that bad. Just a suggestion. The mountains would be nice too.
