As some of you are aware, I will soon be graduating from UNCC. During my schooling I have meet several people that I was students with and a few contacts in the industry. Of course all of these people have several phone numbers, email address's etc.

What software do you guys use to manage your contacts? I know outlook has an address book but is there software used that is more specific to this?

Thanks for any advice and guidance!!

I don't use it a lot, but a lot of people I work with and have worked with use Linked In. It is free and doesn't tie you to a specific computer.

This is what we use at work to keep up with all of our customer contacts. The nice thing about it is it is accessible from anywhere with a Internet link
http://www.salesforce.com/
It might be more than you are looking for, but it does help to keep things organized. I get 12-15 new contacts a week and I have to keep up with whatever stage of progress they are in.

Honestly Honey, that will cost around $100 $150 $200, and I need a few more tools.

Heh, heh...talk about the "Dark Side"....I'd recommend Thunderbird over Outlook....mostly because it's not a Microsoft product, and it's free. It's address book keeps all kinds of information about your contacts.

I just wish I was cocky enough to abandon this operating system, as well.

Check out ACT! by Sage software. Good stable program. I'm probably on my 3rd upgrade over the past 25 years.

Lots of useful features, worth a look.

We use this at work. Very customizable, and easy to use. Seamlessly integrates with many email programs as well. I recommend it.

Don, these may help:

http://www.ubuntu.com/

or this one, that actually includes several versions' links.

http://www.hungrypenguin.net/downloads.html

I've played with setting up Ubuntu, as I have an extra hard drive for my laptop... but I keep having failures with the burned disk for it. When I get the monitor fixed on the laptop, I may just copy it there, and see what happens.

I'm a Thunderbird man myself. But, I like the idea of the web based things. I have lost some numbers over the years by storing numbers in my work computer and it decided to crash.

Phil,
It really depends on what you want to use it for. You can spend up to $400 for contact management programs, but if you just want to keep up with basic information, either Outlook (not Outlook Express) or Mozilla will do just fine. I have used all sorts of programs in my financial consulting practice over the years, and now use Outlook with the Business Contact Manager update, mainly because I sync it up with my business website. You can also use Microsoft's Office Live service, which has a free subscription that allows you to register a domain, free email and contact managment.

I have thunderbird portable loaded on my usb drive and that's what I've been using for emails. I might have to give that a try.

I'm not really looking to spend any money yet, as I am sure where ever I end up will have software they use for their stuff. This is mainly for personal use.

Sandy...do you have any links for any of the Outlook/Microsoft live stuff you are using now?

I use outlook on the desktop and sync this with my Pocket PC phone so I always have the same info with me. I am looking at a product called "Maximiser" for a more advanced customer management tool, but I'll take a look at Dave's "sales force" as well.

Plaxo is what I've used for years. It works well. Syncs with your desktop. Is available anywhere you can get online. You can request that your friends update their own information. And if they are a member of Plaxo and keep it updated, you are automatically updated with their current info. www.plaxo.com

Oh, i've got several versions - and several computers available - back in the day, I had red hat 5.2 up and running and connected to the 'net but wandered off because there were other things I needed to do with the computer that I could just *do* with winduhs (I didn't take the time to figure everything out)...now, it's a matter of time.
But thanks for the information...I've been leaning towards Kubuntu, personally.

Plaxo vs. Linked In for online management...

Use one or both?
