If not in this life then I hope he's not hot natured.....gonna be warm where he spends eternity. As everyone here has stated, wouldn't even consider taking money for the return. My mom lost her pocketbook on Dec 23rd one year when she was 84 on the way to my sister's house for Christmas. I drove over on Christmas Eve and changed all of the locks. By the time I finished, the person who found the pocketbook had tracked my mom down through the drug store listed on a pill bottle, driven 100 mile round trip on Christmas Eve to the drug store that promised to deliver it to her. The pocketbook was home before my mom and the guy wouldn't even take gas money. Never saw him, only conversed over the phone. I get the impression that's the type of people who frequent this site.

I would call the police and see what they say about it. |

I think it is more extortion than stealing. After all he found it, he did not take it. However, the $ value makes it a petty crime.

For a cell phone, I would expect someone to say "Thank you!" and get a firm handshake. Box of cookies on the outside.
Kudos for telling this person to go where the sun doesn't shine.
Of course I would. I'd probably do something weird to it first, like program in the phone number of EVERY Harbor Freight store { AND Golden Corral } in the US, and set the ringtone to Polka music, but I'd return it There fixed it for you.

Doug That's why I'm not a lawyer, it seems like stealing to me. I'd bust his kneecaps anyway. |

Doug Fascinating. Now, if the cell phone contained $1000 worth of ringtones, would it be considered grand larceny?

If so send him a CERTIFIED letter requesting your phone back. Tell him that you are willing to pay shipping charges ($8.95 flat rate box from USPS. Also remind him that you have his identification and are more than willing to file a complaint with local authorities. He has property that he isn't his, and knows who the owner is. |

I realized that I didn't have it when I left work. I was running late for a doctor's appt and really didn't have time to do more than a search of my desk and my car. When I got home I checked with the carrier to see if my phone had been talking to anyone during the day. It had not. I was mentally retracing my steps and figured that I must have lost it as the Dunkin Donuts in Greer that morning. By the time I got home I had an email from John that that was where my phone was (he called me and they answered). Since we do not have a house phone, I figured I'd just go by and get it the next a.m. (Greer is an hour away). When I went by there in the morning they gave me my phone. No calls had been made. The manager had called my mom (labeled mom in my contact list) earlier that morning to tell her where I could pick up my phone. Surprisingly, they must have looked up the number, but called from the business phone - not the cell phone. Due to the way they handled the whole thing, I have no concern that they had access to her phone number (especially since she lives in Okla!). Mom wasn't quite as pleased, since there is an hour time difference, and she got the call at 6:30 a.m. - lol.
So, whoever found it at the store turned it in. They kept it safe and made an effort to contact me. I thought I had set up an ICE (in case of emergency) contact but discovered I hadn't. I have now - you never know when you could need emergency help and this would give someone a person to contact.
All in all, a good experience. I have sent an email to corporate Dunkin Donuts to thank their employees, and a thank you note to that store.

Name: Mike City: Westfield State: NC County: Stokes Join Date: Dec 2005 Age: 51 Avg Visit Freq/Week = 7.00 over 30 days | My son lost a note book full of Boy Scout information, schedules, contacts, etc. We looked everywhere we could think of. The next day we got a call from a grocery store 10 miles away, somebody had found the book on the side of the road and turned it in to the store, they had asked around and started calling local Boy Scouts, who told them our number. So, it took a bit of detective work to find us and they never asked for anything. Now he has his name and phone number on lots of stuff. |
