I have heard of MP3 type devices getting gunk in headphone sockets which disable internal speakers as though a headphone jack was plugged in Anyone heard of this occuring on a laptop? Sound settings appear to be set correctly. Any help/suggestions would be appreciated.

What model do you have? Mine has them top left of the keyboard. Some have them in the center in front of the keyboard (or side) Any chance you hit that by mistake? If both internal and external speakers are silent, it's probably not the speakers!

My experience with Compaq tech support has been good in most instances. It could be something as simple as a driver issue or conflict. I would try calling Compaq tech support.

Puters can be frustrating at times can't they? I have built a good deal of computers from scratch and still tend to overlook the simple stuff when something goes wrong.
