I was wondering how many of you had a plan in place to deal with your tools, guns, or other personal belongings in case something was to happen to you. I’m sure some of you have sons/daughters or other close relatives that you will leave things. But maybe you don’t have anyone or maybe your son/daughter doesn’t have a need/interest in your tools. Would your significant other have any idea how to price your tools/guns/etc?

I think it might be a good idea to inventory such things and maybe put a ballpark figure on what they should be sold for if you were to pass on. This would save your surviving family the trouble of having to figure out what something may be worth.

Just a thought...

Hi Bill,
That's a great suggestion. I do have an inventory list of all my tools, guns, electronics, knife collection, etc. I have serial nos. description and purchase price/date. I don't have prices if the items were to be sold. I'll have to think about how to do that and keep it current.
Thanks for the suggestion,

I am sure the LOML will sell my tools, and keep my guns

A really good point you brought up. I lost a good friend to cancer about a year ago. He had asked that I help his wife sell his shop contents. I was happy to be able to help her with that, as you stated----his wife had no idea what things were worth and did not know what some of the tools were used for.

We still have not sold all the stuff---------but a tool sale is in the near future. North Carolina Woodworker members will have first shot at what is left. Last I talked to the lady, July was mentioned but not confirmed.

It makes you think about the destiny of your own tools!!!

Jerry

Our own demise is something we do not like to think about but you have made a valid point Bill, anything we do now that saves our survivors heartache should be addressed. I have made my own list of most everything but I have this mint condition Shelby AC Cobra stashed in an old tobacco barn.....................

You would think that I would have thought about this as it happened to me 16 years ago. I let tools go for a song after my first husband died. Something else to consider is if you have any "bottled" gases - for welding and such. For hobbyists, the tanks frequently belong to the company supplying the gas. Trust me, they want them back.

Keeping the value current would definitely prove to be the challenge. Good suggestion, thanks for brining it up.

Glenn, I'll go ahead and take that Shelby off your hands now to save you any trouble later on.

Personally, I maintain a complete inventory of my shop items along with model numbers and serial numbers. This primarily for insurance reasons should my shop be broken into and stuff stolen.

As for when I kick the bucket ... I have everything covered in my will. As of right now, everything is going to one of my friends (who doesn't know he'll have to get interested in woodworking). However, longer term I'll probably change the will around a bit and give them to my kids (now that I have some!)

It's a good idea to keep both an inventory and a will ... never know what today has in store.
