Earlier this week I was walking to my shop which is at the back of my lot. I felt a sensation in the groin area and thought nothing of it. It was not a pain or ache, just a slight sensation. Just before getting in the shower that night I noticed a 1/2 golf ball sized bulge in that area. Long story short is that next Thursday morning I'm having surgery for a hernia repair. Supposedly there is not much to this surgery. The surgeon will use a local anesthesia and will put in a plastic mesh patch. It's outpatient surgery. I still plan to be with the Durham lunch bunch the next Wednesday. I'm sure some others here have had this surgery also and I expect theirs was no big deal.

I had that done about twenty years ago. It was not terrible even way back then. Good luck and you will be in my thoughts and prayers!

Honestly Honey, that will cost around $100 $150 $200, and I need a few more tools.

I had mesh repair done for an inguinal hernia in the fall of 2006. I checked in a 9 am and was home by 5:30 pm. Mine was not local anesthetic as the incision was about 5" long. I had aggravated it by building some handicapped ramps after I noticed the first swelling. Has worked quite well and I have definitely put it to the test a few times since.
The hardest part of the recovery for me was I was told not to lift anything more than 5 lbs for 6 weeks and was not allowed to drive for 2 weeks due to the stitches. That means you cannot pick up a gallon of milk. If you are somewhat independent like me, it can be humiliating to have the wife get the case of beer out of the truck and put it in the refrigerator. Oh the trials life puts us through!. Don't know if you will have the same limitations, and I must admit that I may have pushed the envelope some. They gave me some drugs for pain, but I ended up flushing them down the toilet after they expired because I didn't need them.
Please feel free to PM me if you wish further discussion, but it was definitely not a life altering experience. Temporarily inconvenient, but necessary.
Follow the Doc's directions, and call them if you have any questions or concerns.

Hey Stuart,

Had the same operation 10 years ago. Piece of cake. Couldn't drive for 3 days which was like a vacation. Getting up from a chair was something I tried to avoid for the first 2 days. Also, I would avoid watching comedies for a couple of days.... laughing and coughing were not much fun.
Good luck with your procedure.

Ernie

Good luck, Stuart! I had a mesh PLUG and PATCH repair in Dec '05. As everyone has said it's inconvenient and frustrating due to the limitations. I found mine to be more painful than expected and still feel an occasional "twinge" in that area. Doc says it's normal so I don't really worry about it.
I wish you a speedy recovery...

Stuart, good luck. Let's hope the procedure is indeed as straightforward as you described, and speedy recovery!

I had my session with the surgeon this morning and, as expected, things went well, although it took 1 hr 55 minutes rather than the 45 minutes to an hour as I had been told. He said the hernia was impacted (don't really know what that means) and that it was not something that had been there for just a couple of weeks. I wish I could say these 12 hrs since the surgery were as easy as the actual surgery. Even with pain medication, getting out of a chair is not a fun experience. But, things will be better tomorrow. I'm glad the surgery is behind me.

Stuart, glad you are doing well. Take it easy and listen to the doctor, and the LOYL.

Don't even think about doing something you should not. For often, the distance from think to act is a half step.

Stuart,

Glad your surgery went well. In a few days you'll be able to get up from a chair and laugh without much difficulty. Have a quick recovery.

Glad to hear you are on the mend, my friend! Glad you were able to get it taken care of quickly. Take it easy.

I'll take an extra big bite of barbecue on your behalf next week. Seems like the gods of chance are making it tough for you and I to meet over lunch! )

Take care and don't rush it.

Oh no Rick, I plan to be there. I can't let a little thing like this keep me from having lunch with a great bunch of geezers.
