After 12 years with the same major company for boat, homeowners, auto insurance I thought I was "in good hands". When they gave me what I considered a very high rate for ATV coverage I contacted an independent agent. After seeing the price difference I got a quote for all coverage.

I just got the quotes back. I am going to SAVE $1600 per year by changing companies. The providers quoted are very highly rated for customer service and claims and I have actually strengthened my coverage and added an umbrella coverage.

1500 dollars...geesh, that'd buy a pretty decent toy.

I guess it pays to shop around.

It seems you have to change every few years. Glad to see you saved the money. I need to do it again myself on car and home owners as they have both creeped up pretty high IMO.

I would bet if you go back next year, the good hands prices would be worthwhile again.

Its a pity that the companies don't have any loyalty to the long time consumers. I had the same ins co on house & car for many years in FL, and thought I was getting a good rate. Moved here and stayed with the same company. I was impressed that altho they quit insuring new customer homes in FL after all the gulf hurricanes, they did not drop current customers or greatly increase our rates (We did have one claim which they paid me by check 1 week after the claim). A year after I'm here there is this big increase in car insurance (no claims, no tickets, etc for over 20 years). Called for reason and its "we are raising our rates". They lost this customer because their "discount" for having both, and "loyal customer" did not even come close to splitting to another company for car insurance.
Bottom line, we check rates every six months now. No loyalty to me, no loyalty to them. I value a dollar as much as they do.

That is so true, Mark. I think a rule of thumb is to check with other insurers every 2 years. Can be a lot of hassle, but you will know whether your current insurer is keeping pace with the field.
