Lets see if 2 and 2 add up correctly. Bas started this post just as Harbor Freight (his favorite store) puts their 34706 lathe on sale for $199.00. Could it be?

Darth Scroller is trying to seduce me to the Dark Side!!!

Make a foil hat and wear it, just like the rest of us. Or, you can just start turning carving mallets. You do NOT need instructions or plans for them.

Is there any other way than the dark side? I do more turning now than I do any other wood working projects... Well except during scouting season, when I am making boats, cars, saw horses, tool boxes, and many other items....

And if you make one of these, you can save up for a new lathe. http://home.vicnet.net.au/~pwguild/p-mnybox.htm

I don't hear those voices. It seems to me like you are imagining them.

I have never understood the spinny thing. Too messy. About as bad as cutting dovetails with a router. Chips everywhere.

No voices obviously means you're wearing your foil helmet.

You just want to suck all te joy out of life, don't you? I bet you wouldn't even 'consider' using a hand power plane, to round off turning stock, while it's in a running lathe. If you're not at least ankle deep in sawdust and chips, you're not doing it right.

Ummm.. No, I had never thought of that. One thing I am not is graceful, and I am definitively accident prone. That setup sounds like something that would cause me to have to make another trip to the emergency room. For me to do that, I would have to watch someone do it first. It does sound interesting.

Hmmm.... Maybe I should get a PM3520 or a Oneway.......

Nah, Wide belt sander, line borer, or bigger planer first. Unless,,,,, I can get another bonus out of work to buy it!!!!

Well, the first time I tried it, I freehanded it. Lovely fun, get to use TWO powertools at the same time, shavings flying everywhere. Not very accurate, or consistent, tho. So made a shelf like rig that will clamp to the backside of the lathe, and one that will clamp to the frontside. If it needs to be taller, just put some shims under it. Then you can rest the front and back of the power plane on those, and just move the pane back and forth, getting a nice accurate cut. Should be no problem, unless you're really klutzy. On the other hand I will not accept any responsibility whatsoever if someone trys this and gets part of them in the whirly parts. I'm a trained operator. LMAO

Well ok BAS maybe a lathe is not for you, all you can ever make on it is all the round things.

You might already have enough tools, I mean after all if you got a lathe then you would want a chuck, then some new jaws for the chuck, and some cole jaws.

And of course you would need a good turning tool set.
Then some face plates, and a drill chuck for it.
And then you would have to get a pen mandrel, and a set on pen turning tools.
Maybe a steady rest, some calipers, some more tool rests, pen press, pen trimmer it just goes on and on.

Yes I can understand, not wanting to get anymore tools

Now that's hitting below the toolbelt! Fortunately, my brain is limited to one thing at a time. The only way I can multitask is two computers and a chair with wheels..... And right now I'm looking at a new cordless drill. Leaving no room in the brain for anything else, tool or otherwise
