Best of luck in your new job. Sounds a lot better than some of the other ones you tried.

You should think about that idea carefully before you jump. I tried it for a while and it does get old pretty quickly (commuting - not cruising).

Now, you could get one of these:
http://www.teslamotors.com/
Uses NO GAS and is VERY COOL!!!

Now that's a COOL car!!! But, the price is a little out of my league right now!

"The 2009 Roadster available to US residents has an estimated base price of $109,000."

I say go for the motorcycle. I have been riding to work nearly everyday for the past 3 years. Even though you're commuting and not crusing it still beats sitting in a box for 80 miles a day.

Honestly Honey, that will cost around $100 $150 $200, and I need a few more tools.

Lets just say I won't starve while riding....

Nah I'm pretty much an ATGATT kinda rider. Thats all the gear all the time, except during the summer when its just too hot to wear the overpants.

Oldest brother has been riding since early 60's, using bike as MAIN transportation for most of the time, and offered me the following four salient pieces of advice when I discussed with him the possibility of a bike:
  1. Wear a helmet. Not a skull cap. Full face if possible. Though he lives in California, with no helmet law, he says "A helmet is a brain bucket. If ya don't wear one, ya ain't got any!"
  2. The first thing to learn is how to get off of it. If you ride long enough, you will lay it down. Learn how to do that safely.
  3. When you lose respect for it, that's when it'll kill you.
  4. No matter who has the right-of-way legally, you don't.
He's the only person I know of to put 250,000+ miles on more than one bike. I'd say he knows of which he speaks. He also LOVES to ride, and has done so safely for 47+ years.

I say get the bike, learn to ride it, and never look back.

  3. When you lose respect for it, that's when it'll kill you. Kinda like woodworking equipment, huh?
  4. No matter who has the right-of-way legally, you don't. He who is biggest has right of way!

Don't worry, although it's been a few years since I had one, I know how the game is played! Thanks for the advice anyway...it never hurts to be reminded!!! I just have to weigh how much pain I'll be in from the LOML if I get one!!!

I do 35 miles each way from Weddington to the University Heights area, and don't mind it a bit. There's not many people going on 485 in that direction and I pretty much leave it on cruise control the whole way. From my house to the desk it's about 45 minutes. Of course, since I'm from NYC, this is the shortest commute I've ever had, since I was about 13 years old.

Mostly I listen to audiobooks. It's a great way to pass the time and sometimes I think that the car ride is one of the nicest times of the day .

One thing though - if there's any way you can get in from 9-9:30am instead of earlier, the roads will be much emptier. I do this a lot and leave later instead of being the early bird, because there are a lot more cars on the road 1-2 hours earlier.
