Yeah you will be okay with what you have. Those air forks for tracking are the equavalent to a constant open air line at 40-60psi.

Hi Trav. I too have been debating between acquiring a 24 versus a 37" wide belt sander, but in my case i'm intersted in production work.

I spent a day at the IWF show, and came away impressed by two of the Grizzly machines. They had a really nice 24" 10HP unit, that used a roller on the bottom. Their in-house expert (the fellow that sands their guitar wood), preferred this particular machine.

My other choice was a 37" dual belt sander, that used a roller for the primary belt and a platen for the secondary belt. This is a 20HP model

Both sanders did a really nice job. We took some thin slices down to less than .010 on the 24, and down to .040 or thereabouts on the dual drum. Tolerances across the sanded pieces were exceptional - less than a few thousands of an inch.

I recall that the 24 was slightly under 9K, and the 37 was around 13K.

I think that you end up with more HP per square inch of sanded surface with the 24" model, because all 10hp is allocated to a narrow sanding strip. Thus you should theoretically be able to sand more aggressively with the 24 versus the 37.

One thing that I liked about the Grizzly's - as compared with some of the other machines - was that the belt that the board travels on has relatively narrow distances between supports. Some of the larger machines had less belt in contact with your workpiece, which would not be as beneficial for sanding thin veneer.

Hope this helps. If you're interested, let me know and I'll provide the model numbers of the two machines that I liked.

Scott

I believe this sort of discussion happens about this time every year...bonus time again?

You know what you want...you've worked hard to earn it...get it. And post plenty of pics. I love it when a plan comes together.

(seriously, Travis, get what you want)

Chuck, how could you think such a thing?????

The first time this came about wasn't really a bonus. They bought the bandsaw for me for the exceptional work I did.

I'm still torn though. 24 or 37. 37 would be sweet, but I am running out of space.

Travis, your predicament does not surprise me at all. Man, I've got it easy. For me it's just, do I have the money for this or not?

Good luck buddy.

Well, a 37'' sander does take up a fair amount of real estate (about 4' x 6' plus the infeed and outfeed space) -- here's a picture of a colleagues Grizzly G0450 15 HP/3-phase dual drum sander smoothing a nice 10' slab of Bubinga for a project I did early last year -- piece of cake for two people and shop pet assistants...

Don't forget to allow some shop space for belts
