Travis,

I have built up my shop by doing commissioned work and I re-invest in that business by buying new or used tools which can be deducted as legitimate business expenses. That way, I don't eat into the family budget and my purchases are less likely to irk SWMBO. I also go out of my way to do special things for her whenever possible so she doesn't feel neglected. My new 8" jointer I bought in July cost over $1,140 and she didn't bat an eye -- in fact, she was worried I might strain myself getting it out of my truck and insisted I get help (which I did).

If I were in your shoes, I'd back away now and tell her that you'd like to get the sander, but only after you can budget for it -- in the interim, look for a good used drum sander (I bought a 26" Woodmaster 20 months ago for $750 with commisioned work dollars). IMHO, no tool purchase is worth jeopardizing your family relationships.

I have read th mars/venus series several years ago. To be honest, there is no jeoporady in the house, and all is actually well.

She is good with the 24" because of price. If I were buying a new 37 or larger then she would have heart failure....... Sooooo,,,,,,, I believe the decision is made.

24" here I come!!!! Plus a couple of other toyls.....

Hi Travis,

Just curious to know if you have 3phase power set up in your shop. There were some good deals on IRS but they were all 3ph power requiring, and I don't know if the sander+converter would still cost less than that 24" you're considering.

Just a thought . . .

Pre-Congrats,
Todd

Todd:

Travis purchased a very larger phase converter around the time of his Felder acquistion.

Well then that 24" must be priced nicely, because there have been some nice ones on IRS lately.

TP,
Ya know, one of these days, you might need to sand a full sheet of plywood, so with that consideration, maybe you should hold back and wait to get a good deal on a 49" model. Then again, you may find that you need to run that plywood through "sideways" instead of regular, so let's wait a bit more and get a 97" rig.

I came through Henderson today, and there are some deals on 140,000SF spaces right on US1. Maybe you can persuade your spouse to let you rent/lease one of those closed-up manufacturing plants (No, I don't want to talk about losing jobs overseas) and really set up a nice shop.

I'll help you move your stuff if I can have what falls off my trailer.

Jim

Travis, I can recommend a new product that Grizzly introduced at the IWF in Atlanta -- it is a combined planer / belt sander. I know, it is not a Timesaver or a Woodmaster, but it is a solid machine. IIRC, it is 24" wide and either or both planer and belt sander can be engaged at once or independently. It only occupied about 6-8 SF of floor space, too! I'm not sure when it will be available, but it does run on 3-phase power and will cost a bit over $10K, just in case you're interested. Unfortunately, I didn't take a picture of it and there isn't any info on their website yet.

With the small footprint, you'd probably have room for a futon or cot in your shop, too!

Then your jointer would be too small!!

Travis,
How much air compressor do you have? The wide belt sanders with pneumatic belt tracking take quiet a bit of air. If you don't have a 3-5hp 80gal compressor you may have to upgrade in the near future. I want to think that the mentioned 37" Timesaver is single phase 220V with belt tracking controlled by a light beam. Air is only used to tension the belt on the sanders with light beams. Anyway, just something to think about and check out before making a decision.

$10K would definitively cause a ruckus in my household. There is NO way I can get that, especially after just buying a 20" planer.

From someone who doesn't think he can afford an 8" jointer:

Methinks the "need" for the sander may be partially driven by the upcoming 842 cabinet doors still to be built. (or was that 40 doors and 30 drawers?). Sounds like that project may be weighing on your mind some, as it is and has been a massive undertaking. If the smaller will do what you need, and you really don't anticipate taking on even bigger endeavors, you may want to err on the side of caution here, until the current project is done and you can re-evaluate what future projects you really want to commit to.

Of course, I don't have a job or the talent to do what you are doing. Just sharing my thoughts.

Travis
It sounds to me like you should get her counter tops and then buy the sander.

I hadn't considered the compressed air. I have a 5 hp 60 gallon so I should be ok, but I didn't think it used that much. Thanks for the insight!
