Just do me a favor, if you find one on CL, don't take your time picking it up. We don't want you to lose out on the sander like you've been losing out on mortisers .
Good luck bro'
Jimmy
ps. she'll only be mad for a short time, and as an old timer once told me "she'll get over it" .gif)

The way I got my wife to agree for me to buy a wide belt sander (16" performax) happened this way.....She wanted me to make a 48"round dining table for one of her friends (who was willing to pay handsomely for the table). I said I couldn't make it because I wouldn't want to sand the top with a belt sander. (I reminded her of the problems of using belt sanders on large pieces and particularly large flat surfaces).
Finally I took the table top to The Hardwood Store in Gibsonville and had it sanded in 10 minutes. It looked wonderful!! (not a commercial, but those guys do good work).
After she commented on how nice the table came out, I dropped into the conversation that I could do more of this kind of work if I had a wide belt sander.
That 16" performax is on my Christmas list and I fully expect Santa to bring it to me. (does this story pull me to the top of the list of people who want your Performax)
Just remember this....whatever you do there is a 75% chance you will be wrong!!!!!!!!

Name: Travis City: Wake Forest State: NC County: Wake Join Date: Dec 2005 Avg Visit Freq/Week = 6.53 over 30 days | I asked about it again last night and got "all I want is to be with my children". I have been giving her a hard time that she gets everything she wants. I have to go to work every day while she gets to stay with the kids and go out and about. I got an eye roll out of it, and then told go somewhere, but me being the sweetheart that I am I have kept on about it. Every conversation in the house with the kids and/or her, always goes back to the "wide belt sander". "If I had a wide belt sander". "It would be better if I had a wide belt sander". We talk about the oldest going to school, and I say "school would be better if I had a wide belt sander".
Now, I hear, "fine, go get it. Get such and such to ride with you. When are you going?" So, I am a bit "afraid".
Sooooo......... I am going to do it.
Now I have a problem. What to get........
I can get an older 24" unit for a very good price or a 37" unit that is a bit more than I really want to spend. As an FYI, the 37 has sat near my jointer in it's previous life.
Two issues as I see it. The money for the 37", but worse is the floor space. My little shop is starting to get a bit cramped. The 24" is older, and I wonder if I can get parts if needed and then I think about not being able to sand wider stuff. But then, how much wider stuff do I sand?
If I get the 24", I can buy other stuff too......
I get the 37" and it is WIDE, already on wheels, has a DRO, and it is only a few years old, but all that space....
Hmmm..............
Well, I am going to clean up the Performax, dig out the manuals, and put it up for sale tomorrow. That will "seal" the deal with her if nothing else.

By your tone, I would say that you feel you are spending WAY too much "Family" money on yourself. By lowering your spec and spending less than she said you could, she will see that at least you are thinking about the purchase and the amount of money.

How wide a belt do you really need?
Another thing to look at is this. Would it be possible for you to rent time so people who don't have a wide belt of their own can still have the advantages at a reasonable cost? This would also return some of your investment much faster than simply using it yourself.
The Hardwood Store has a very wide (37 or 42 not sure) sander and rent it for $1 per minute. They are invconvenient because of their location.
If there were one available in the Cary area, I would be happy to buy the time instead of buying the sander. (that would free up more money for good cigars!!)

Name: Geoff City: Lillington State: NC County: Harnett Join Date: Jan 2008 Avg Visit Freq/Week = 7.00 over 30 days | I sell fishing tackle to finance my woodworking habit. This kinda keeps LOML happy. But there are times, like now, when she will ask me if enough is enough. I really don't have room for anything that isn't portable ie: like sitting on a bench. But when the "I wants" hit it is hard to back away. All kidding aside, I think Andy has a great suggestion. Either rent time on one or rent yours out when you get it. If you rent out time you might save me the same thing you are going through!! |

They have many more members than North Carolina Woodworker, so the chance of finding someone actually being sympathetic to your dilemma on whether to get a 24" or a 37" is much greater
I say go with the 24". You'll save some money, and more importantly, you'll save shop space. Shop space is much, much more valuable. Nothing worse than bumping into tools trying to maneuver large sheets of plywood and messing up assembly because you have no room! How many projects will you have that need that extra sanding capacity? Of course, Murphy's law applies to wide belt sanders too - if you buy a 37" machine, the next project requires 48" capacity. As Andy said, you can always take it to a cabinet shop and rent time on a machine instead.
You said you can get the 24" for a very good price. Worse case, you sell it in a few years for what you paid for it, and then upgrade. Best of all, you showed LOYL your constraint, consideration and insight.
If you feel better now, stop reading. Get the 37"!!!! Bigger is better!!! Things are good with a 24" wide belt sander. But things are GREAT with a 37" belt sander. If you get the smaller one, you'll have one project after another that requires the extra capacity, and you'll be kicking yourself. And LOYL will be grumpy no matter which machine you get, so you might as well get some mileage out of it. Shop space - it's only a foot or so difference. You can always add a little section to the back of the shop for storage. Or do some creative stacking. Maybe replace that slider with a conventional table saw again.
You know you want it. You NEED it. You DESERVE it. Why deny yourself this pleasure? You're a good husband/ father/ citizen. You are ENTITLED to it!
