Question

We had our A/C checked in Feb by a company that called and offered to do it. Since it hadn't been done in a couple years I figured it would be a good idea. When we went to turn it on we noticed it wasn't cooling very well and I found that it was freezing up (sign of low refrigerant). I called the guy that came in February, but then hesitated and thought he may have done something so he could come back out and "fix" it when it got warmer so I didn't call him. I had friends from Church recommend someone, but after 6 calls to him yesterday I am looking elsewhere.

I talked to Morris Jenkins this morning, but they can't come out until Thursday. Long story short....my wife and I both work from home and it is unbearable in the afternoon and I need an A/C company to come out ASAP.

Does anyone know of a good and fair company that I can call to come take a look?

Just as I clicked submit the guy that I was referred to called. He is on his way. The reason he didn't call me back yesterday is because he came down with heat exhaustion and was down for the count. We will hopefully have the AC fixed very soon. I also hope the checking account doesn't get lightened up to much. I'll keep you posted.

Best of luck Mike! Better get it fixed before the weekend. It's going to get hot towards the end of the week.

Good luck. I am not an HVAC tech, but it sounds like your reversing valve is not operating. It is supposed to kick in every 10 minutes or so to keep freeze ups from occurring. I do not believe your previous guy could have caused it, but I can't say for sure.

If you have a heat pump, it would be in use in the winter as well. If you are on a gas pack, it normally doesn't get used in the winter months.

Mike, I hope you have better luck than I did. I had to replace my whole gas pack as the heat exchanger panel had rotted through. $4800 -- ouch.

We're back up and cooling off!!! It appear one of the schrader valve was not sealing completely after the guy checked it in Feb so it has been slowly leaking out. When my new AC guy went to unscrew the cap you could see the refrigerant coming out.

Here is the amazing part. It is a Puron system and the guy that checked in Feb told me last week that Puron was $92/lb if we needed it. My new found friend and AC guy charged me $20/lb . If anyone needs AC work done in the Charlotte area send me a PM and I will give you his name. I highly recommend him.

Mike,

Congrats on getting the system up and running so quickly.

If I lived in the Charlotte area I think I would also ask you for the name of the $92 guy

Yeah, I got a good shake with the guy I hired to do my work. He came recommended by a ham friend of mine and did excellent work for very reasonable money. Finding the ones that give you a square deal takes more effort.
Anyone in the Triad who needs a recommendation for an HVAC guy, PM me and I will likewise send along a referral.

Leaking Schrader valves are more common than most think. That is why I get the METAL caps with the "O" ring inside. Tighten them down with Channel Locks. It only took me one lost charge to figure that one out. Last weekend, checked freon in both units. Both are Carrier Heat Pumps.

Mike, I envy your quick solution to your problem. 4 weeks ago, I had a tech come out for a check and estimate. took three or four days to get the estimate back to my regional office, then it got dropped somewhere at the corporate level, then we found out that in my lease, I am only responsible for the first $750 in repairs, but.... the property manager had to be found first. My store is in a location formerly occupied by Dollar General, and they have a property management branch called DG Properties. Both phone numbers we had for them were no longer in service! Finally some one found them, on Monday 2 June. Unfortunately, they have to contact the property owner to accept the estimate we have, to pay the additional(it's nearly a $5000 job). Yesterday it was 87 degrees in my store. I hope they get this authorized for work today. Not looking forward to a long weekend in the heat.

didn't know such a thing existed. Where would one inquire about such a device? (metal o-ring cap???)

$72 lb price difference ? Did the Feb, guy "cold call" you ? (no pun intended) An offer for "service" that comes out of the clear blue sky is always suspect IMHO but I have a cynicism developed from years in Criminal Justice. I am glad that all worked out well, the weather this week is a bear !!
